Notes:
Summary The morphology of blends of isotactic polypropylene and linear polyethylene up to a PE content of 40% has been investigated by optical microscopy. These incompatible systems segregate into two discrete phases where the PE phase appears in approximately globular shaped domains of some µm in size. Size and distribution of the PE domains are determined both by the thermal history of the sample and by the composition. The size of the PE domains increases with the PE content as well as with the temperature of the melt and the time of annealing in the melt. While the polyethylene in the blend crystallizes non-spherulitic, the polypropylene matrix builds up large spherulites under the crystallization conditions chosen. The growth of these spherulites is not influenced by the presence of the PE domains, although these domains are built in the spherulites. The spherulitic growth rate is independent of the composition.
