Notes: Abstract Electrographic seizure activity was recorded shortly following naxolone injections in artificially ventilated, methadone-treated stump-tailed macaques. Plasma-methadone concentrations prior to seizure activity were many times higher than those that have produced respiratory depression and death in nonventilated monkeys. The duration of seizure activity was clearly related to the dose of naloxone. Naloxone was without epileptogenic properties in animals that had not been pretreated with methadone. The results suggest that methadone and naloxone have additive epileptogenic properties when high blood levels of methadone are achieved in the artificially ventilated primate. Naloxone was devoid of antagonistic properties with respect to opiate-induced electroencephalographic spiking activity.

Notes: Summary The effects of cyclophosphamide were studied 2, 5 and 9 days after terminating a two-week every-second-day intraperitoneal medication in young, male rats. The cytostatic effect was assessed by counting white blood cells (WBC) in arterial blood. WBC counts were reduced by 72% of control values at 2 days and regained normal values at 9 days after an overshooting leucocytosis at 5 days. Compared to control animals, the treated rats had significantly reduced body weights, metaphyseal bending strength and longitudinal growth of the femur at all time intervals observed. The torsional strength of the femur diaphysis and the strength of wounded skin were not affected at 2 days, but significantly reduced at 5 and 9 days. The tensile strength of intact skin was not found to be affected by the drug. From the 5th to the 9th day after ending medication, the curves for control and treated animals were assuming parallel slopes regarding metaphyseal bone strength, longitudinal bone growth and tensile strength of wounds. This may indicate reversion of the drug effects approximately one week after terminating medication.

Notes: Summary Simple operation for refixation of the superior retinaculum of the peronaeal tendon for treatment of recurrent dislocations of the peronaeal tendon is described. The prepared retinaculum is fixed into a cleft of the lateral malleolus with a screw. This operation is also suitable for treatment of the recurrent dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon.

Notes: Abstract Bovine factor VIII/platelet aggregating factor was adsorbed onto gold granules and the protein-gold complex added to either formalin-fixed or fresh washed human platelets. Following aggregation, binding of gold granules to the platelets was measured by monitoring the optical density of colloidal gold remaining in the supernatant. Scatchard analysis of binding data indicated that multiple classes of binding sites were present. The number of high affinity binding sites per formalin-fixed platelet dependend on the concentration of ristocetin: 420 gold granules were calculated to bind at 1.4 mg/ml of ristocetin, 610 at 0.6 mg/ml of ristocetin and 875 when no ristocetin was added. Fresh washed platelets bound 1350 granules per cell in the absence of ristocetin. We conclude that during platelet aggregation, induced by bovine factor VIII, the binding sites on the platelet surface are only partially occupied.

Notes: Summary Dextran, glycerol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), alone or in combination, were used for cryoprotection of human bone marrow cells. The viability of cryopreserved cells was assessed by culture of myelopoiesis-committed stem cells (CFU-c) in vitro. A significantly better protection against freezing injury was obtained by 9% dextran in combination with 3 or 5% DMSO, and also with 5 or 10% DMSO alone, than with either 15% glycerol or 9% dextran with 1% DMSO.

Notes: Abstract To determine the influence of expert testimony regarding the general unreliability of eyewitnesses, a two-phase study was conducted. In the first phase, 24 community residents served as jurors on four six-person juries. A burglary case was tried in 120 District Court. El Paso, Texas. Two juries heard all the evidence including the expert testimony of a psychologist and the other two heard all of the testimony except that of the psychologist. During the second phase, 24 student jurors constituting four six-person juries viewed a videotape of the trial. Two of these juries saw the entire proceeding from the first phase including the expert testimony and the remaining two saw all but the expert testimony. All juries acquitted the defendant; however, those who heard the expert testimony significantly lowered their judgments of the accuracy and reliability of eyewitness identification as well as its overall importance to the trial. Further, those juries that heard the expert testimony spent a significantly longer time discussing eyewitness identification as well as other relevant evidence. No differences between community residents and college student juries were obtained.
