Notes: With a compact arrangement using single-crystal collimator and analyzer (silicon 220 reflection) of channel-cut type, angle-resolved scattering (ARS) curves of X-rays (Cu Kα1) for optically flat mirrors have been measured at various glancing angles, ω, of X-rays to the mirror surface with an angular resolution of 4′′. Weak scattered intensity (10−3–10−5 of the specularly reflected beam) is observed over an angular range of a few hundred arc s below and above the direction of specular reflection. When ω is close to the critical angle for total reflection, the scattered intensity at the low-angle tail of ARS curves is higher than that at the high-angle tail. This asymmetric tail profile of ARS curves is explained by simply superposing intensities of specularly reflected beams from surface elements inclined to each other.

Notes: [Auszug] Adrenal glands were removed aseptically from 8- to 10-day-old Wistar strain rats of either sex. Medullae were carefully freed from capsular and cortical tissue by using a pair of knives and/or fine tungsten needles under a dissecting microscope, and then incubated with dispase (1,000 U per ml ...

Notes: Summary A short-term organ culture of rat tracheal epithelium was used to detect the ability of 53 chemicals to induce UDS. In this system all direct-acting compounds (ultimate or proximate carcinogens) tested induced UDS. Of 24 compounds requiring metabolism (procarcinogens), nine induced UDS, viz., 4NQO, AF-2, BP, DMN, DEN, and NP. Urethane, AAF, and 2,7-AAF induced very slight UDS. 3-Methyl-4NQO for which carcinogenicity data is incomplete was positive in our system. Among the cancer chemotherapeutic agents tested only mitomycin C induced UDS. MC and DMBA, which are known to induce cancer of respiratory organs in experimental animals, and DAB, aflatoxin B1 and Trp-P-1, which are strong carcinogens in the liver, did not induce UDS within 2 h. With the longer exposure (24 h), these carcinogens also failed to elicit UDS. All the carcinogens that induce UDS showed clear dose-dependent effects. No non-carcinogens tested induced UDS. These results suggested that this system should be useful for screening environmental chemicals suspected of damaging DNA of the respiratory organ on the basis of organotropic effects for UDS induction in cultured rat tracheal epithelium.

Notes: Summary Many suggestions have been made regarding protective methods against lightning, without any quantitative tests of safety. As a fundamental study on lightning protection, the lethal threshold energy for the artificial lightning impulse was investigated, using 14 rabbits. The voltage and current impulse had a 1 µs wave front and 40 µs wave tail. The imposed energy was measured by simultaneous photographic recording of both voltage and current waves on separate oscilloscopes. The impulse voltage was applied to head, neck, upper chest, and lower chest while the right hind limb was grounded. Artificial lightning current impulses were fed through the skin of the animals by making the surface flash over so that the surface flash was monitored carefully to delete the data of this case which gives an erroneous energy value from the statistical analysis. The lethal threshold energy was found to be 157.6 ± 54.1 Joule (J), and the percentage of survival was 25% when 160 J impulse energy was given. Impulses of 160 J were then applied to the heads of 21 other rabbits maintained on an artificial respirator. Under these conditions the percentage of survival increased significantly to 47.6%.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents three analytical models for the investigation of the stiffness and strength of woven fabric composites. The “mosaic model” is effective in predicting the elastic properties of fabric composites. The “fibre undulation model” takes into account fibre continuity and undulation and has been adopted for modelling the “knee behaviour” of plain weave fabric composites. The “bridging model” is developed to simulate the load transfer among the interlaced regions in satin composites. The theoretical predictions coincide extremely well with experimental measurements. The elastic stiffness and knee stress in satin composites are higher than those in plain weave composites due to the presence of the bridging regions in the weaving pattern.

Notes: Abstract The longitudinal polarization of “strangeness Arizona muon”, namely, the 236 MeV/cμ + from the K+→μ + v μ decay, has been measured to search for right-handed weak current in the strangeness changing process. The polarization has been determined to be −0.967±0.047.

Notes: A study of polymer-polymer interaction was made on several poly-L-lysines that contained pendant nucleic acid bases substituted on the N′ position. Conformation and interaction of these polypeptides were studied in solution by spectroscopic measurement. The results obtained suggest that the high-molecular-weight polymers form polymer complexes in a helical conformation by specific adenine-thymine base pairing. On the other hand, no interaction could be observed for the low-molecular-weight polymers, which existed in a random coil structure.

Notes: It has been found that when hydrophobic monomers are polymerized in the presence of highly hydrophilic polymer seed particles, the second-stage hydrophobic polymers form cores surrounded by the first-stage hydrophilic polymers, resulting in “inverted” core-shell latexes. The formation of core-shell morphology by this inversion process has been found to be dependent on the hydrophilicity and molecular weight of the first-stage hydrophilic polymers and the extent of phase separation between the two polymers involved. Particle morphology has been examined by electron microscopy, surface acid titration, alkali swelling of particles, and surface reactivity.
