Notes: Abstract Recent superconductivity and crystallographic data for the MM′X ternary compounds with M = Ti, Zr, or Hf, M′ = Ru or Os, and X = P or As are presented. Moderate to high superconducting transition temperatures (T c 's)are exhibited by the ZrRuSi-type hexagonal phase which is found to be metastable at low temperatures. The low-temperature phase of ZrRuP has the TiNiSi-type orthorhombic structure and exhibits superconductivity at 3.9K. The low-temperature phase of HfRuAs has the TiFeSi-type orthorhombic superstructure and remains normal at 1.0K. TiRuAs exists only with the superstructure and remains normal at 0.35K. The details of these various structural modifications point to the importance of undistorted zig-zag chains of metal atoms for the occurrence of superconductivity in these compounds. The lowT c for TiRuP and the absence of superconductivity for TiOsP above 0.35K are not accounted for by these structural modifications.

Notes: Detailed measurements of the magnetization of HoRh4B4 and GdRh4B4 near the magnetic transition temperature are presented. In contrast to the ferromagnetic behavior of GdRh4B4, no spontaneous magnetization is found to develop below T min HoRh4B4. This raises doubts about the nature of the magnetic order in that material as well as in DyRh4B4 and TbRh4B4. Anisotropy and time dependence of the magnetization are found in these last three compounds. The behavior of the very small remanent magnetization and of the paramagnetic susceptibility of HoRh4B4 is shown. These results point to a complex magnetic order, possibly helical or sinusoidal antiferromagnetism with a long wavelength.

Notes: Abstract Low-temperature specific heat, electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility, and dc magnetization measurements were made on ternary cerium and uranium transition metal borides with the general formula CeT3B2 (T=Co, Ru, Rh, and Ir) and UT3B2 (T=Co, Ru, and Ir). The compound CeRu3B2 was found to exhibit superconductivity below 0.68 K. The values of the electronic specific heat coefficient range from 9.7 mJ/mole-K2 for CeCo3B2 to 64 mJ/mole-K2 for UIr3B2. The electrical resistivity versus temperature curves of all of the compounds exhibit negative curvature and are reminiscent of valence fluctuation behavior. In the case of CeIr3B2, the electrical resistivity attains a maximum value at 180 K, while the dc magnetic susceptibility has a temperature dependence that is typical of intermediate valence Ce compounds, approaching a finite value at zero temperature. The electrical resistivity of the ferromagnetic compound CeRh3B2 reveals a rapid decrease in spin disorder resistivity below 120 K. The dc magnetic susceptibility of this material can be described as the sum of a constant term and a Curie-Weiss contribution with an effective magnetic moment of 1.01 µB per formula unit and a Curie-Weiss temperature of 119 K. Magnetization measurements on CeRh3B2 yield a saturation magnetic moment of 0.37 µB per formula unit and a Curie temperature of 113 K.

Notes: Abstract The pseudoternary compound Ho(Ir0.7Rh0.3)4B4, which had previously been reported to exhibit the occurrence of antiferromagnetism above the superconducting transition, has been examined using heat capacity, ac magnetic susceptibility, upper critical magnetic field, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, electrical resistance, thermal conductivity, and static magnetization measurements. The data confirm the bulk nature of the antiferromagnetic phase transition and are consistent with the presence of bulk superconductivity coexisting with magnetic order.
