    Notes: Abstract A full-automatic wavelength controled pulsed dye laser has been developed. With the control system, dye laser oscillations of nanosecond pulses are tuned to any wavelength in the visible or scanned in any sweep mode keeping the nearly transform-limited bandwidth of 0.45 GHz. A mechanical tuning of the wavelength is employed, such that the motion of three wavelength selectors is synchronized to give a smooth and precise wavelength control. The basic principle underlying the tuning scheme, various requirements to be met in system construction, and the practical performance of automatic wavelength control are described in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract A high precision wavelength meter in the visible is described, which is based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer with several etalons of different resolution. The interference fringe pattern projected on a photo-diode array detector is computationally processed to give a stepwise refinement of the wavelength value to any adjusted accuracy. The present model intends to provide digital and real-time values of high precision wavelength for dye-laser spectroscopy, and to serve as a monitor or as a pilot for wavelength control of a dye-laser source of nanosecond pulses. The model is, therefore, designed with particular emphasis on its short-pulse capability and on-line mode of operation as well as on its high sensitivity and resolution. Some arrangements of essential necessity are involved therein, such as to avoid an errorneous wavelength readout for a noisy incidence of pulsed field. The ultimate accuracy of wavelength measurement is prescribed by the resolving power of the thickest etalon employed. As applied to the pulsed source, the model determines the wavelength to the accuracy of ±one part in 107 for even a single shot nanosecond incidence of a fraction of μJ energy. The design and performance are described in connection to pulsed dye-laser incidence.

    Notes: Summary Detailed examination is made of the responses of visual cortical cells (area 17, border 17–18 and adjacent area 18) in the anaesthetized cat to stationary flashing bars and to bars (lines) and edges moving at their optimal velocities. Particular attention is given to the receptive field organization of cells in the simple family. While there is good general agreement between the main receptive field subregions revealed by stationary and moving stimuli, the responses to moving light and dark bars, supplemented by the responses to moving light and dark edges, provide a much more rapid, accurate and complete guide to the spatial organization of the receptive fields than do the response profiles to a stationary flashing bar. Moving light and dark bars between them generally reveal more subregions in the receptive fields of simple cells than is evident from the response profiles to a stationary flashing bar, particularly when the receptive fields have many subregions. In addition the responses to moving edges provide a rapid guide to spatial summation across the width of a subregion and the possible antagonistic effects of the next subregion in sequence. Two subclasses of cells in the simple family have been recognized: ordinary simple and fast simple cells. Two cell classes (A-cells and silent periodic cells) having properties intermediate between simple and complex types are discriminated and their properties described.

    Notes: Nevic corpuscle in the pigmented nevus was studied under light microscopy in comparison with Meissner corpuscle of the human sole skin in order to determine its ontogenesis. No nerve fibers within nevic corpuscle but coiled fibers in Meissner corpuscle could be demonstrated by Bodian slain. Presence of S-100 protein in the pigmented nevus and Meissner corpuscle was observed under light microscopy utilizing peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunohistochemical staining. S-IOU protein was more evident in nevic corpuscles than in Types A and B intradermal nevus cells. Meissner corpuscle showed moderate stainability for S-100 protein. Ultrastructural study revealed that the nevic corpuscle was composed of the laminated cells with flattened cytoplasmic processes but lacked peripheral nerve endings such as axons, characteristically shown in Meissner corpuscle. No melanogenic activity of nevic corpuscle was observed. These morphological and histochemical findings of nevic corpuscle did not enable us lo give definite conclusion on its ontogenesis.

    Notes: Abstract Differential staining of sister chromatids in male mouse meiotic cells was achieved by continuous infusion with BrdU from the tail vein followed by Giemsa staining (the FPG technique of Perry and Wolff, 1974). Analysis of 341 bivalents including XY, and 21 univalents reveals that: (1) visible crossing over coincided exactly with the site of chiasmata; (2) no evidence was obtained in support of chiasma terminalisation; (3) an anomalous type of crossing over was found in the monochiasmatic bivalents, which could not be explained by the conventional hypothesis for crossing over; (4) some of the terminally associated bivalents might be achiasmatic, and univalents might have originated from such bivalents; (5) in XY bivalents, sister chromatid association was between lightly and darkly stained chromatids, suggesting a lack of crossing over and the existence of other genetic controls for this association; (6) during meiosis sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) might be less frequent than crossovers.

    Notes: Summary Restriction endonucleases discriminated between the rDNAs contained in callus tissues derived from Nicotiana glauca, N. langsdorffii, and their somatic hybrids produced by protoplast fusion. With XbaI, a single repeat fragment of 7.5 × 106 daltons was produced from N. glauca rDNA compared to a single repeat fragment of 4.2 × 106 daltons produced from N. langsdorffii rDNA. Both kinds of XbaI fragments were found in somatic hybrids.

    Notes: Summary A protein-bound polysaccharide from mycelia ofCoriolus versicolor PS-K, clinically used as an immunomodulator, has been shown to restore the decreased cellular immune response and to exhibit host-mediated antitumor activity. In this experiment, PS-K was found to increase serum complement level in guinea pig and in human without malignancy, when hemolytic assay of complement was performed using sensitized sheep erythrocytes for the classical pathway activity and unsensitized rabbit erythrocytes for the alternative pathway activity. Assay of complement components revealed increase in C3 level in guinea pig, but no significant changes in Clq, C4, C3, properdin, C3 activator, and C $$\bar 1$$ -inhibitor in human, while C5 and C9 were depressed. Conversion ofβ1C toβ1A was observed in the 7th day's plasma of these patients by crossed immunoelectrophoresis. Biosynthesis of guinea pig C3 was accelerated by administration of PS-K, but that of C4 was not affected. These evidences suggested that PS-K might potentiate immune response of the host by elevating serum complement level, in addition to the activation of the complement system.

    Notes: Abstract A computer controlled system is presented for a high-precision, time-domain measurement of molecular fluorescence induced by a pulsed dye laser field. In this system three intelligent functions are assembled by the system controller: they are an automatic wavelength control of pulsed dye laser to 0.45 GHz resolution, a digital wavelength meter of 10−7 precision, and a high-speed waveform digitizer with 10 ps inherent resolution. Then the system achieves a unique capability such as to record real-time data of fluorescence decay in the nanosecond regime under an on-line monitor and control of the laser wavelength to milliangstrom precision. The basic constitution and practical performance of the system are described with particular emphasis on its high precision and multi-task capability.
