    Notes: Summary The de-emulsifying ability of two bacteria (i.e.,N. amarae andC. petrophilum) has been demonstrated on water-in-oil petroleum field emulsions. De-emulsification by whole cultures and by washed cells was correlated with changes in the culture during growth. For each species, there was a particular growth phase which produced a species-dependent de-emulsification optimum.

    Notes: Summary The kinetics of ethanol production by Kluyveromyces marxianus ATCC 12708 and ATCC 10606, K. cicerisporus ATCC 22295 and K. fragilis 105 have been studied using raw juice of the Jerusalem artichoke in which the carbohydrates were not hydrolysed prior to fermentation. The experiments revealed that this juice contains enough nutrients and can serve as a complete medium without additional nutrients both for growth of the yeasts and for ethanol production. It was found that both specific ethanol productivity and specific glucose uptake rates were the highest with K. marxianus ATCC 12708 (1.68 gg-1h-1 and 3.78 gg-1h-1 respectively). This microorganism produced an ethanol yield of 87.5% of the theoretical value in 25 hours.

    Notes: Summary Corynebacterium lepus grown in a mineral salts medium containing glucose as the sole carbon source produced a significant amount of cell-bound surfactant. Some alkenes or a mixture of alkenes added to a water suspension of the cells released a considerable amount of surfactant from the cells. Both surface and interfacial tensions of the suspension were reduced to 30–32 mN/m and 1–2 mN/m respectively as a consequence of this release. According to the dynamics of surfactant release, it is assumed that some alkenes easily “flow” into the cells, predominantly through direct contact with these hydrocarbons.

    Notes: Summary Nocardia amarae has been shown to be a potent biological de-emulsifier of model oil-in-water emulsions and petroleum water-in-oil field emulsions. N. amarae is reported here to de-emulsify petroleum oil-in-water field emulsions. Parameters affecting the growth and the de-emulsifying ability of this bacterium have been examined. Bacteria-induced de-emulsifying activity could be useful in clarifying tailings ponds and sludges.

    Notes: Summary Citrobacter intermedius was grown in a 14-liter fermenter under batch anaerobic conditions at the following controlled pH values: 5, 5.75, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, and 8.0. The growth medium was a glucose mineral salts medium with 0.1% ammonium sulfate as the source of sulfur. The optimum pH for H2 production was 5.75 and 6.0 which gave a yield of 1.1 moles H2/mole glucose. The optimum H2-productivity was 144 moles H2 per hour at pH 6.0.

Juice extracted of the carbohydrates. Fermentation was also carried out with raw artichokes without prior juice extraction. Result indicate that this row material has good potential for fuel alcohol production by fermentation.

    Notes: A. paraffineus ATCC 19558 grown in MMSM (modified mineral salts medium) containing hydrocarbon produced surfactant, with a maximum CMC-1 value obtained by using hexadecane as the carbon source. No activity of surface active agent in whole broth was observed when glucose was used in the MMSM instead of hexadecane. The biomass concentration obtained with glucose was about 40% of that obtained with hexadecane. Glucose (4%) in the medium contaning hexadecane caused a 27 and 21% decrease of biomass and surfactant concentrations, respectively. In the process of surfactant production, glucose can be used as a carbon source for growth, and hexadecane added later can serve for production of the surface active agent. The optimum temperature for production of surfactant is 27°C.

    Notes: The optimum operating conditions for growth and ethanol production of Zymomonas anaerobia ATCC 29501 were established. The optimum pH range and temperature were found to be 5.0-6.0 and 35°C, respectively. Based on the results obtained from the temperature optimization study, an Arrhenius-type temperature relationship for the specific growth rate was developed. The growth and ethanol production of this microbe also have been optimized in terms of concentrations of glucose, essential nutrients, and minerals. With optimum medium and operating conditions, an ethanol concentration of 96 g/L was obtained in 23 h. Both growth and ethanol yield coefficients in dependence on initial glucose concentrations were determined.

The best species for fodder beet juice fermentation was chosen and products obtained by fermentation of one hectare of fodder beet plants are given.
