Notes: Summary Eighteen cases of intracranial meningioma that received preoperative or post-operative irradiation with60Cobalt or Linac have been reviewed. Eight patients received preoperative irradiation because their tumours were very large, hypervascular, and surgically not readily accessible. Two angioblastic meningiomas of the haemangiopericytoma type responded well to irradiation and were easily extirpated. One of these developed a local recurrence and metastases to the lungs and liver nine years after surgery. The recurrent intracranial tumour and nodules in the lungs responded well to irradiation. The other six cases of meningiomas of meningothelial, transitional, or haemangioblastoma types, did not improve clinically or radiologically after irradiation. Ten cases received postoperative irradiation because their tumours were only partially removed or were histologically malignant. In all cases irradiation was most effective for recurrent tumours of the haemangiopericytoma type. This study indicates that irradiation is useful in tumours of the haemangiopericytoma type as an adjunct to surgery or for palliation in advanced stages. Irradiation may have been effective in supressing recurrences in two cases of other types of meningioma, although the number of cases is too small to allow any definite conclusion.

Notes: Summary The radiological manifestations of primary intracranial sarcomas may be non-specific and they vary widely according to their histological variations. Reticulum cell sarcomas, however, can be included in the differential diagnosis with a high degree of reliability when one observes a hypovascular mass with arterial encasement and deep medullary veins. Tumor vessels and tumor stains supplied by dilated feeding arteries suggest the possibility of a sarcoma of the brain or of the meninges in infants. Nine reticulum cell sarcomas, four undifferentiated sarcomas, and one fibrosarcoma are presented here with their radiological manifestations, especially on angiography.

Notes: Summary The radiological manifestations of 16 pituitary adenomas, six meningiomas and 14 craniopharyngiomas were reviewed. The differential diagnosis of these tumors is possible with a few exceptions when skull radiography, CT, angiography and metrizamide cisternography are carefully evaluated. Prolonged injection angiography (PIA) is particularly important for demonstrating the contours of pituitary adenomas and meningiomas. Metrizamide cisternography is indicated when the tumor contours are obscure using PIA, or when the differential diagnosis is uncertain.

Notes: Summary Forty-two acoustic neurinomas and seven meningiomas in the cerebellopontine angle were reviewed, and the radiological differential diagnosis of these tumors is discussed. Though enlarged internal auditory meati and characteristic CT findings were reasonably reliable indicators for the diagnosis of acoustic neurinomas, it was angiography which substantiated their correct diagnosis. An arcuate vein was frequently demonstrated with acoustic neurinomas, but never with meningiomas. Visualization of tangled veins seems to favor a diagnosis of acoustic neurinomas. Contrary to earlier reports, tumor stains were most frequently visualized using selective external carotid arteriography. The degree of tumor stains did not aid in differentiating acoustic neurinomas from meningiomas. The importance of using angiotomography, especially in the anteroposterior projection, and external carotid angiography during prolonged injections of large amounts of contrast media, is emphasized.

Notes: Summary Rats fed on a diet containing 0.25% DL-ethionine (ethionine), which has been usually used as carcinogenic dose, demonstrated the early elevations of serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) approximately in week 6 of the feeding. After declining once between week 10 and week 14, the serum AFP levels increased again in week 22 of the continuous feeding, when well differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma had already developed. The level of serum AFP after development of hepatoma was found to be lower than those seen during the early elevation of AFP. Furthermore, in ethionine-induced hepatoma-bearing rats, AFP levels in the tumors were rather low as compared to those in the non-tumorous portions of the liver surrounding the tumors. The results indicate that ethionine-induced hepatocellular carcinoma is not an AFP-highly-producing tumor.

Notes: Summary Primary mass cultures of isolated liver cells, which were prepared from normal adult rat by a collagenase-liver-perfusion technique, were treated with 3′-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (3′-Me-DAB) to study the production of transformed liver cells. Enzymatically isolated liver cells had high sensitivity to 3′-Me-DAB in primary culture. By 2- or 6-day treatment, mature hepatocytes remarkably decreased in their numbers due to cytotoxic effect of 3-Me-DAB, but thereafter active proliferation of epithelial-like clear cells was observed. Six-day treatment induced epithelial-like clear cells with gross chromosomal abnormalities, although 2-day treatment failed to induce transformed cells. However, the transformed epithelial-like clear cells with chromosomal abnormalities were negative for gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase (GGT).
