Synthesis of Medium and Large Rings, III. Reactions of a β,β′-Hexano-bridged OxepinReactions of the β,β′-hexano-bridged oxepin 1a give no indications for the existence of a valence tautomeric equilibrium between 1a and the corresponding arene oxide 2a, a derivative of the strained [6]paracyclophane. The oxepin ring of 1a is stable against deoxygenation and isomerisation. Some electrophilic and nucleophillic reagents only react with the ethoxycarbonyl groups to give 1b and 1c. Hydrogenation and epoxidation of 1a lead to the hexano-bridged seven-membered ring systems 3a, 4a, and 5a. Bromine adds to 1a to give the 1,8-dibromide 6a. Stereochemical and mechanistic aspects of the formation of the products 1b-6a are discussed.
Notes:
