Notes: The heat flow equation in cylindrical coordinates is solved numerically for any general distribution of thermal diffusivity. The temperature stabilization of a borehole is considered, and solutions for the case where thermal diffusivity is a function of radial distance from the borehole are obtained and compared to solutions for uniform diffusivity. The results are discussed in terms of thermal diffusivities that are different for the well contents and for the surrounding material. It is found that the approach to formation temperature is affected by differences between well contents and the surrounding region.

Notes: There is a significant increase in terrestrial heat flow with depth in the Hinton-Edson area of the deep part of the western Canadian sedimentary basin in Alberta. This is especially true near the Rocky Mountain foothills which is an area of high relief, high hydraulic head and regional water recharge. Gravity-imposed downward movement of meteoric water through the thick sedimentary strata with velocities as low as 10–10 m/s to 0.5 × 10–9 m/s may cause an increase of heat flow with depth. Such disturbance of heat flow with depth on a regional scale in the sedimentary strata means that it is not possible to determine the background conductive steady-state heat flow associated with crustal or upper mantle heat sources in such an area from measurement of conductive heat flow in the part of the sedimentary column where water movement occurs. This is because the convective portion cannot be determined, particularly when measurements are made in only part of the regional hydrodynamic system of the basin.

Notes: Summary. Hydatid disease of the female pelvis is rare in gynaecological practice. In Libya, where the disease is endemic, 14 women with pelvic hydatid disease were encountered in one hospital department between 1971 and 1979. Five of these women were pregnant, a hospital prevalence of 1 in 20000. The other nine women accounted for 0.3% of all gynaecological laparotomies in the same hospital. The clinical features, diagnosis and management of this rare condition are described.

Notes: Summary A method to preserve the temporary preparations of Dipteran salivary gland chromosomes during longer periods has been described. Departures from the usual procedure are: absence of heat treatment, destaining of cytoplasm with lactoacetic acid and the use of ‘rubber cement’ as the sealing material. This procedure preserves the banding details, ectopic pairing and clear background for exceptionally longer periods.

Notes: Abstract Though hard to construct, difficult to maintain, and yet limited in scope, the karez irrigation system has been an integral part of agricultural landscape in Baluchistan province of Pakistan for the last 2500 years, if not earlier. The irrigation system is well adjusted with the social and political institutions in Baluchistan and synchronizes with the local economies. Archaeology indicates that the idea of karez irrigation originated in the Indus Valley Civilization of Pakistan, while philology, method of construction, migration of karez technocrats support the view that the technology was introduced from Afghanistan and not from Iran as is generally accepted. An attempt has been made in this paper to examine the ecology of karez irrigation in Pakistan in terms of its nature, origin, diffusion and persistence including the recent changes in the system wherein tunnels are being replaced by cement pipes and “Delay Action Dams.”. The delay action dams are being introduced to augment the subsurface water supply. The tube-wells and modern electric-powered pumps are impinging on the karezes and may ultimately destroy the fragile ecosystem of Baluchistan, including the age-old karez irrigation system.

Notes: Summary Variation in the nitrogen content of seed of six barley cultivars was brought about by growing parent plants at four nitrogen levels. Shoot dry weight of plants grown for 23 days from these seeds was generally enhanced by an increase in seed nitrogen content. The most responsive cultivar was a primitive type of barley from Ethiopia. Cultivars with a longer breeding history were less responsive. Risø 1508 apparently had physiological and biochemical limitations in responding to extra seed nitrogen. In the barley cultivars studied extra seed nitrogen seems to supplement, rather than substitute for, nitrogen fertilizer in the seed bed.

Notes: The reduction in distillation tray efficiency caused by uniform weeping of liquid from the tray has been calculated. Numerical results are presented for all three Lewis cases over the range of variables of interest to tray designers. Analytical equations are given for Lewis' cases 2 and 3 for plug flow of liquid on the tray.

Notes: Summary A new technique has been developed for estimating the wave loadings on large circular cylinders. The theory, mainly due to Lighthill, has been applied to the case of large cylinders. Comparison with the previously reported experimental results shows favourable agreement for the range of parameters indicated in the graphs.
