Notizen: Abstract We demonstrate an application of PAC to the study of magnetic ordering in random alloys. Using111Cd as a probe the spin-glass freezing inAuFe-alloys of different concentrations could be observed. In the Au82Fe18 alloy no indication of ferromagnetism above the freezing temperature was found, due to the fact that the111In probe nuclei are located in a Au rich environment.

Notizen: Abstract Using the phonon model of Nishiyama and Riegel for the electric field gradient we have investigated the possibility of an isotopic mass effect. We will show that there is an isotopic mass effect nearT=0 K. In this temperature region the electric field gradient depends on the probe atom mass only.

Notizen: Abstract Time differential perturbed angular correlation measurements on the implated single crystal system $${}^{129}\mathop {{\text{Te}}}\limits^ \to {\text{Te}}$$ and $${}^{132}\mathop {{\text{Te}}}\limits^ \to {\text{Te}}$$ , using an allowed β-γ cascade, are reported. The information obtained, determines the orientation of the principal axes system of the electric fieldgradient and its value at room temperature. The results are compared with earlier Mössbauer effect measurements and the binding of an iodine impurity in tellurium is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The electric quadrupole interaction at iodine implanted in zinc and cadmium single crystals is investigated, using the β-γ perturbed angular correlation technique. The results show that the implanted129Te and132Te isotopes occupy two well-defined sites, identified by the electric field gradient parameters. One fraction of the impurities is substitutionally implanted, witheq zz=−1.49(9)1018 and −1.58(15)1018V/cm2, in Zn and Cd respectively. The other fraction is identified as an impurity-divacancy configuration with |eq zz |=3.81(8)1018V/cm2; η=0.72(4) for Zn and |eq zz |=3.55(11)1018V/cm2; η=0.53(13) for Cd. The electronic enhancement in the electric fieldgradient at the substitutional site equalsK=−0.66 and −0.56 respectively and follows the empirical trend ofK versus the impurity valence for the s-p elements in Zinc.

Notizen: Abstract The nuclear quadrupole interaction at the100Rh probe nucleus in a Be host is measured from 4.2–968 K using time-differential perturbed γ-γ angular correlations of the 84–75 keV cascade in the de-excitation of100Rh. The sources were prepared by recoilimplanting the parent100Pd activity produced in a heavy-ion reaction. The temperature variation of the electric field gradient can nicely be fitted by aT 3/2 law. We discuss the electric field gradient and its temperature dependence in the light of various systematics. The data are also compared with the predictions of the conduction electron charge shift model suggested by Bodenstedt and Perscheid.

Notizen: Abstract We discuss specific features of those angular correlation experiments sensitive to the nuclear polarization in the intermediate state and investigate, in view of radiation damage studies, the interest of using allowed as well as first-forbidden β-decay as the primary radiation in a TDPAC cascade. The description of the technique is illustrated by experiments on the samples $$^{129} \mathop {Te}\limits^ \to \underline {Ni} , ^{132} \mathop {Te}\limits^ \to \underline {Ni} , ^{111} \mathop {Ag}\limits^ \to \underline {Ni}$$ and $$^{133} \mathop {Xe}\limits^ \to \underline {Ni}$$ produced by ion implantation into nickel single crystals. These results clearly demonstrate the unique possibility to make the experiments selectively sensitive to those impurity atoms associated with lattice defects. Although the formulation is in all aspects general especially the cross terms (k1≠k2) in the angular correlation treatment are emphasized. In this way the presence of a combined hyperfine interaction, cumbersome for radiation damage studies, has been explored to gain sensitivity in impurity site characterization.

Notizen: Abstract The time-integral angular distribution was measured as a function of an external magnetic field for γ-rays from the 398 keV 2 9+ state of69Ge populated by bombarding a Zn single crystal with a natural α-beam from a cyclotron. Clear resonances of dispersion as well as Lorentz type having a narrow width consistent with the natural width (τ=4 μs) were observed at Bres=9.15 kG corresponding to the first level-crossing resonance of the 2 9+ state due to the combined collinear magnetic and quadrupole interactions. The effects of noncollinearity were also demonstrated and compared with theory. As an application of this resonance method, the temperature dependence of the quadrupole interaction frequency was measured.

Notizen: Abstract The large recoil energies offered by the heavy ion nuclear reactions were used to implant the100Pd(3.6 d) activity into different host matrices. The sources thus prepared were found to have good strengths and small background activities. The yields were quite high ∼3μCi/1μAh beam current of12C4+ and the efficiencies of implantation were in the range 60–70%. The difference in the recoil energies of the target and the catcher may be used to reduce activities due to unwanted nuclear reactions in the catcher foil. Using this method, we were able to prepare excellent sources of100Pd in Be, Mg, Ti, Zr and Re hosts. The quality of these sources is comparable to that of the100PdBe ion implanted sources for which data are available in the literature.

Notizen: Abstract This report deals with the interpretation of experimental results on hyperfine interaction (h.f.i.) detected by nuclear radiation, in cases where the interaction has neither a unique nor a random orientation. A formulation has been drawn up to derive from such experiments (angular correlation or nuclear orientation) the appropriate components of the h.f.i. orientational distribution. We expand the so-called texture distribution function by using the Wigner rotation matrices and defining the texture components. Some symmetries in these components are discussed together with features imposed by the crystal symmetry of the host lattice. We show that the angular distribution of nuclear radiation can be developed as a linear combination in the texture components. The detection geometry selects which components are observed, what allows to design experiments such that a differentiation between texture models is possible. Finally some tables illustrate the general applicability of the present formulation to any kind of texture.
