Notes: Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis have been treated by many drugs with different modes of action such as topical disodium cromoglycate and ipratropium bromide, systemic antihistamines and corticosteroid drugs and topical corticosteroids. Yet, these therapies are not entirely satisfactory for all symptoms. The rationale for the topical, intranasal use of antihistamines in patients is discussed. Topical antihistamine agents arc administered in order to avoid the side effects of systematically applied medications, and to reach higher local drug concentrations. H1 receptors of the nasal mucosa play an important role in the physiopathology of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis and even of infectious rhinitis. Most studies using topical antihistamines in rhinitis, had an experimental physiopathological aim and did not explore clinical efficacy. Recently, topical application of levocabastine—a potent H1 antagonist—yielded good clinical results in allergic conjunctivitis, seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, and non allergic perennial rhinitis.

Notes: This study is a methodological approach to histamine nasal provocation. The test uses active anterior rhinomanometry and a histamine titration method, challenging both nasal cavities with a metered dose pump. It has been confirmed that the histamine nasal provocation test can differentiate between controls and non-allergic rhinitis patients. This study shows, moreover, that the method is more sensitive in assessing response to histamine provocation when a 25% increase of post-saline nasal airway resistance (PD25) is considered than a PD50 or PD100 criterion. The histamine response, was found to be independent of the baseline nasal airway resistance value. Pronounced unilateral responsiveness was frequently noticed. Both nasal cavities should be challenged and the most reactive side considered.

Notes: Abstract We present an experimental and theoretical study of the carrier capture time into a semiconductor quantum well. We observe for the first time the predicted oscillations of the phonon emission induced capture time experimentally and found good agreement with theory. Calculations show that not only does the LO phonon emission induced capture time (ph capture) oscillate as a function of well width, but also the carrier-carrier scattering induced capture time (c-c capture) oscillates by more than an order of magnitude as a function of the active layer design. Recently, it has been shown that the carrier capture time is directly related to the modulation bandwidth in a quantum well laser. As a result, it might be possible to tailor the modulation bandwidth by optimizing the capture efficiency using a proper design of the active layer in a quantum well laser.

Notes: Abstract The application of model based control techniques to biotechnological processes is often hampered due to the lack of reliable on-line sensors. This problem can be tackled by the application of software sensors, in which the available hardware measurements are combined with the model equations. The resulting estimates serve as additional measurements useful for process monitoring and control. In this paper, an observer based estimator for the specific growth rate based on on-line viable biomass measurements is studied. Several fed-batch experiments with baker's yeast in a stirred tank bioreactor illustrate the design, tuning, and implementation from a practical point of view. The main contributions of this paper are to illustrate (i) the implementation and validation of the presented algorithm in real-time, (ii) the use of an advanced on-line biomass measurement, and (iii) the design and tuning of the algorithm from a practical point of view. Real-time knowledge of the specific growth rate is important because it yields information on the viability of the cells and it can be used in real-time feedback control algorithms.

Notes: Abstract Baker's yeast is one of the micro-organisms that is studied most in literature. Therefore, a lot of knowledge on the biochemical pathways and corresponding yield coefficients is available. This knowledge is combined with measurements of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the exit-gas to determine the coefficients appearing in the stoichiometric equations. In this manner, two measurements are sufficient to yield on-line estimates for biomass, glucose, ethanol and the specific growth rate, and information about the (ill-defined) nitrogen source NH q . This is not possible if the yield coefficients are not included in the estimation procedure. A sensitivity analysis illustrates that this estimation scheme is rather insensitive to uncertainties on the yield coefficients.

Notes: Summary The present paper describes an experimental model where union was delayed in an osteotomy gap of the rabbit fibula by means of a silicone rubber spacer during 48 days. After the silicone spacer had been removed, electrical transistor regulated direct current of 20 microampères delivered through stainless steel electrodes was used to stimulate osteogenesis on the right side during 62 days. On the left side a sham operation inserting stainless steel electrodes without current was performed. In one out of six animals overbridging callus was received on the stimulated side. In the rest of the animals a high frequency of synostoses between the fibular ends and the tibia was found. There was no significant difference in synostosis formation between the right and the left side. No adverse effect of the current could be detected histologically.
