    Notes: Cells resembling the smaller variants of the Warthin-Finkeldey giant cells of measles were observed in the pulmonary alveolar capillaries in a high percentage of primates and humans apparently free from pathological changes associated with measles. Cells resembling megakaryocytes were found also in the liver and spleen in both groups but only in a small minority of cases. The relative appearances and distribution of these two types of cells pointed to their both being circulating megakaryocytes, the majority being filtered off in the pulmonary alveolar capillaries, where they become compressed. The paucity of these cells in other tissues is a reflection of the small number of megakaryocytes capable of passing along the alveolar capillaries. The presence of these cells in the lungs and to a lesser extent elsewhere appears to be a frequent occurrence in both diseased and healthy subjects and the factors involved in their appearance are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes the initial phase of a project to develop eddy-current methods to inspect welds joining sections of austenitic stainless steel pipe having walls up to 13 mm (0.5 in.) thick. The objective of this phase was to demonstrate the feasibility of detecting and characterizing flaws in austenitic stainless steel base metals. These materials and welds present challenging eddy-current problems because of their relatively large thickness and ferromagnetism. Multiparameter analysis shows that a reflection coil probe operated with three discrete driver frequencies and phase detection can locate and size a cracklike defect in a single conductor in the presence of variations in conductor resistivity, permeability, and thickness and in the probe-conductor spacing (liftoff). Experiments were performed with a modular three-frequency instrument. Flat-plate specimens of types 304L and 347 stainless steel machined to 12.7 to 15.9 mm thickness simulated pipe walls; saw-cut slots 10 to 30% of nominal specimen thickness simulated cracklike defects. The same slots were used in duplicate experiments as near-side (directly under the test probe) or far-side (in the face opposite the probe) defects. Flaw detection and characterization capability was demonstrated by a series of experimental measurements fitted to specimen properties by least squares techniques. The quality of the fit determined the expected accuracy of measurement. Comparison of accuracy estimates determined the best choice of operating frequencies. From the 1,2,5 sequence of frequencies between 0.5 and 20 kHz, the optimum set of operating frequencies was selected to be 0.5, 2, and 10 kHz. Estimates of measurement accuracy for combined near- and far-side defect cases were: plate thickness, 0.74 mm; probe liftoff, 0.03 mm; defect location (depth of material above defect), 3.48 mm; and defect size (vertical slot depth), 1.09 mm. A few property values were back-calculated from instrument readings; the errors in these values were somewhat larger than the measurement accuracy estimates because of instrument drift and the absence of calibration circuits.

    Notes: Abstract Scientific assessment of the complex environmental consequences of large spills of oil or other hazardous substances has stimulated development of improved strategies for rapid and valid collection and processing of ecological data. The combination of coastal processes and geological measurements developed by Hayes & Gundlach (1978), together with selected field biological and chemical observations/measurements, provide an ecosystem impact assessment approach which is termed “integrated zonal method of ecological impact assessment.” Ecological assessment of oil and hazardous material spills has been divided into three distinct phases: (1) first-order response studies — conducted at the time of the initial spill event, which gather data to document acute impacts and assist decision-makers in prioritization of cleanup efforts and protection of ecologically sensitive habitats, (2) second-order response studies — conducted two months to one year post-spill, which document any delayed mortality and attempt to identify potential sublethal impacts in sensitive species, and (3) third-order response studies — conducted one to three years post-spill, to document chronic impacts (both lethal and sublethal) to specific indicator species. Data collected during first-order response studies are gathered in a quantitative manner so that the initial assessment may become a baseline for later, more detailed, post-spill scientific efforts. First- and second-order response studies of the “Peck Slip” oil spill in Puerto Rico illustrate the usefulness of this method. The need for contingency planning before a spill has been discussed along with the use of the Vulnerability Index, a method in which coastal environments are classified on a scale of 1–10, based upon their potential susceptibility to oiling. A study of the lower Cook Inlet section of the Alaskan coast illustrates the practical application of this method.

    Notes: Abstract A simple and reproducible method of establishing cell lines from the blood of sheep and cattle is described. Buffy coat cells were allowed to adhere to plastic culture flasks in media containing 20 per cent autologous plasma overnight. The fluids were then replaced with growth medium supplemented with non-inactivated foetal calf serum, lamb serum or autologous serum. Ovine cell lines were established with any of the serum supplements but bovine cell lines were established more readily if unheated autologous serum was used.

    Notes: Summary Eleven island-atoll types typical of the Pacific lithospheric plate are described. Tectonic-volcanic information which might help explain present island-atoll forms is then detailed. This information concerns the movement of the Pacific lithospheric plate into deeper occan as the plate ages, effects of reheating mid-plate areas, compressional effects before the plate is subducted and the origin and local isostasy of the original island volcanic bases. Examples of seamount chains such as the Hawaiian-Emperor are then examined to see how impinging tectonic factors relate to observed island-atoll forms. The paper concludes with one model integrating the tectonicvolcanic possibilities so as to account for all Pacific plate island-atoll types.
