Notes: Summary Spirulina platensis has been grown in an outdoor pilot production unit, with an exposed surface area of 450 m2, on a medium consisting of raw domestic sewage supplemented with sodium bicarbonate and nitrate or urea fertilizer. The chemical composition and yield of the biomass grown on sewage-nitrate was comparable to that grown on synthetic medium. The protein content was much lower in the alga cultivated in sewage-urea medium.

Notes: Summary A method for cultivatingSpirulina platensis in domestic raw sewage, coupled with pisciculture and water reclamation in an integrated recycling system, has been standardized. The alga is grown in an indigenously designed open-air pilot production unit consisting of 4 concrete basins with a total surface area of 450 m2. The harvesting and processing methods are based on simple filtration and sun drying. Extensive bench and field experiments have made it possible to produce pure blooms of AfricanSpirulina in sewage, using sodium bicarbonate and nitrate, and employing a fertilizing schedule which replenishes nitrogen withdrawn from the medium by the alga. Although urea and several ammoniacal nitrogen sources have been tried, the best source of protein-inducing nitrogen for mass cultivation ofSpirulina appears to be nitric nitrogen.

Notes: Abstract The present communication deals with the morphology, reproduction and cytology of Stigeoclonium pascheri (formerly described as Caespitella pascheri Vischer). Effects of various concentrations of nitrate and variations in intensity and duration of light period in 24 hr LD cycles were studied on cultures of this alga in relation to the type and extent of branching and occurrence or absence of hair formation. It is concluded that these traits are not of taxonomic significance and are influenced largely by environmental conditions. The present study shows a large overlapping of morphological characters between the genera Stigeoclonium and Caespitella and supports Cox & Bold's abandonment of the latter generic name and its merger into the genus Stigeoclonium. The chromosome number determined for this alga is n = 6 which indicates that the Indian strain of this alga is a distinct cytotype from the one originally isolated by Vischer.

Notes: Abstract A simple method is used to determine the curvature of an attached shock wave and the flow variable gradients behind the shock curve at the tip of a straight-edged wedge placed symmetrically in a supersonic flow of a radiating gas near the optically thin limit. The shock curvature and the flow variable gradients along the wedge at the tip are computed for a wide range of upstream flow Mach numbers and wedge angles. Several interesting results are noted; in particular, it is found that the effect of an increase in the upstream flow Mach number or the radiative flux is to enhance the shock wave curvature which, however, decreases with an increase in the specific heat ratio or the wedge angle.

Notes: Summary The rate of amplification of a discontinuity in the velocity gradient is evaluated at the wave-head in a spatially uniform but time evolving flow of a relaxing gas. The paper investigates the effects of relaxation (present in the flow) and the initial wave front curvature on the growth and decay behaviour of waves in the thermodynamical state of weak or strong equilibrium.

Notes: Abstract The present communication deals with the observations made on the morphology, reproduction and cytology ofUlothrix zonata (Weber & Mohr)Kütz. in culture. The alga displays a remarkable phenotypic plasticity in nature as well as in culture. The present study provides additional evidence of karyology in support ofLokhorst andVroman's treatment ofU. zonata which merges a number of earlier described species in it. The cytological details and chromosome number (n = 10) determined for the Indian isolates ofU. zonata agree with those ofSarma for the British material.

Notes: Bi-ionic and multi-ionic potentials across parchment-supported mercuric sulfide membrane with various combinations of 1:1 electrlytes at different concentrations were measured. Membrane conductivity in contact with a single electrolyte was experimentally determined to evaluate selectivity of the membrane with the predetermined values of intramembrane mobility ratio. The selectivity sequence of the membrane was K+〉Na+〉Li+, which on the basis of the Eisenman-Sherry model of membrane selectivity, points toward the weak field strength of the charge groups attached to the membrane matrix. The permeability ratio of ions within the membrane was also evaluated by use of the equation based on the macroscopic linear laws of nonequilibrium thermodynamics derived by Sandblom and Eisenman. Three different methods of various integrated forms of the Nernst-Plank flux equation were used to derive the potentiometric selectivity constant Kijpot of the membrane. These values were close to one another.
