Notes: Summary Changes in extracellular pH (pH o ) in human red cell suspensions were monitored in a stopped-flow rapid reaction apparatus. A 20% suspension of washed human RBC in saline at pH 7 containing NaHCO3 and extracellular carbonic anhydrase was mixed with an equal volume of buffered saline solution at pH 6.7. Sodium salicylate, when present, was added to both the erythrocyte suspension and the buffer solution. The effects of salicylate in the therapeutic to toxic concentration range on HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange were studied at 37°C. HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange flux was estimated using the extracellular buffer capacity and the difference betweendpH o /dt using a control RBC suspension and that using a suspension of RBC whose anion exchange pathway was markedly inhibited. The results show that salicylate competitively decreases the rate of HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange, with inhibition increasing as salicylate concentration increases.K I is ∼2.4mm. At a salicylate concentration of 10mm, HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange under the conditions of our experiments was inhibited by more than 70%. These findings are consistent with the possibility that CO2 transfer in capillary bedsin vivo may be diminished in the presence of salicylate due to slowing of red cell HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange.

Notes: Abstract In Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase and fructose 1,6-bisphosphate phosphatase were studied, which could not be detected in previous investigations. Aldolase appeared to be a class I enzyme. Enzyme activity was only detectable in direction of aldol condensation in presence of Mg2+ and under anaerobic conditions. It was stimulated by dithioerythritol. The regulatory properties of the hexose bisphosphate phosphatase differed in many ways from those of the enzyme from other organisms.

Notes: A method is described for the isolation of large amounts of physiologically active protoplasts from leaves of Pisum sativum L. Rubidium uptake was determined after separation of the intact protoplasts from the loading medium by rapid centrifugation through a phthalate step gradient. In freshly isolated mesophyll protoplasts of Pisum sativum, rubidium uptake was carbonylcyanide-p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone reduced by metabolic inhibitors such as 5 μM, 0.1 mW cyanide, 2 μM DCMU and 5 mM arsenate and by dark incubation. Reduction of rubidium uptake by inhibition of aerobic respiration or the photosynthetic electron transport system demonstrates that both processes play a role in the energy supply for membrane transport in these protoplasts.

Notes: Abstract The analysis of charge state distributions after the interaction of fast Li- and N-ions with a surface at grazing incidence at energies between 50 and 350 keV yields for Li a strongly suppressed and for N an enhanced fraction of neutrals in comparison to the beam-foil interaction. These findings are supported by corresponding alkali-spectra which are dominated by lines from transitions in singly ionized atoms. The experiments are consistently interpreted in terms of a two step model: (1) collisional excitation in the close vicinity of the surface and (2) modification of this population by resonant electron transfer from (to) non localized states in the conduction (valence) band to (from) the ion. The model is also applied to interpret recent beam-foil experiments where preferential populations of Rydberg levels in highly ionized atoms were found.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A theory of similarity is proposed which can be applied for many problems in continuum mechanics. Therefore the structure of frequently arising boundary value problems is analysed. It is outlined that solutions are similar for power-type material laws only. In this case simple design formulae can be developed. Especially the displacement of rigid foundations in sand can be described in a simple way by the theory of similarity assuming an appropriately formulated material law. The remaining unknown parameters can be determined in model tests. The constitutive relation chosen for sand is verified by special element tests. In addition the assumptions of the theory are checked in many model tests yielding good agreement.

Notes: Abstract The circular polarization of atomic transitions after the interaction of fast nitrogen ions with a solid surface at grazing incidence is investigated at energies for the incident ions from 0.4 up to 15 MeV. Large degrees of circular polarization in the visible part of the spectrum are found so that the application of this technique for producing nuclear spin polarized ions is feasible.
