Notes: Fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted under conditions of equibiaxial, uniaxial and shear loading by using a cruciform specimen in a servo hydraulic testing machine. The effect of non-singular stress cycling on the fatigue crack propagation rate was examined based on the observation of crack opening behavior. The crack propagation rate was significantly influenced by the non-singular stress parallel to the crack when it was correlated to the stress intensity range. The crack closure behavior was greatly affected by the non-singular stress. The crack propagation rate was uniquely correlated to the effective range of the stress intensity factor except for the case of completely reversed shear loading where significant plasticity was detected. The crack opening displacement range was concluded to be a parameter controlling the crack propagation rate for all the stress conditions examined in the present experiments. Some discussion is made on the effect of material anisotropy on fatigue crack propagation in a biaxial stress field.

Notes: Summary Mumps virus replication was examined in various culture cells derived from mice. Eight of 16 lymphoid cell lines and 4 of 13 non-lymphoid cell lines supported the replication of Vero cell-adapted Enders strain (EY) of mumps virus. EY strain replicated more efficiently in lymphoid cell lines than in non-lymphoid ones. T cell preference, however, was not observed in this study. The growth kinetics of EY strain in high yield cell lines such as EL-4, L1210 and NS-18 cells were similar to that in Vero cells, while in low yield cell lines such as DK, C243 and 203GL cells the growth patterns varied respectively. Nineteen kinds of primary culture cells of murine origin all proved not to be susceptible for EY strain, even when spleen cells were stimulated with lectins or allogeneic cells. Seven other strains of mumps virus were examined for their ability to replicate in EL-4, L1210 and L929 cells. Four and 6 strains replicated in EL-4 cells and L1210 cells respectively, although the growth patterns and yields varied in each virus-cell combinations. On the other hand, none of 7 strains showed sufficient replication in L929 cells.

Notes: [Auszug] Cellulose paper was dipped into a solution of 10"1 M MV2 + in methyl alcohol for lOmin and then dried under air for 15min. This dipping and drying procedure was repeated, and the cellulose was then dried in vacuo at room temperature. From the UV spectra of the solution before and after dipping, the ...

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Klinisch-elektrophysiologische Untersuchungen wurden bei 39 Patienten mit Guillain-Barré Syndrom durchgeführt.
Notes: Summary Clinical and electrophysiological studies were carried out on 39 patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome to evaluate which elements were of prognostic value during the acute phase. Residual clinical signs such as motor weakness and absent patellar tendon reflexes were found in 16 (52%) of those patients who had had a preceding illness. Persistence of deficit was significantly correlated to age at onset, the degree of quadriparesis and loss of deep sensation in the acute phase. Of the 10 patients who showed a reduction in motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV) in the early stage, 8 (80%) revealed significantly residual clinical symptoms at follow-up. There was a tendency for the incidence of residual signs to be more common in the patients with slowing of mixed nerve conduction velocity, and prolonged latency of H-wave and the residual latency. Nerve conduction studies, especially measurement of MCV, were of value as a reliable prognostic indicator in this syndrome.

Notes: A synthetic approach that makes symmetrically 2,3-dialkyl-substituted succinates and compounds prepared from 2,3-dialkyl-substituted succinates easily available has been developed. Coupling of α-bromoalkanoic esters with a zinc/copper couple produced in about 40% yield 2,3-disubstituted succinates which were reduced with LiAlH4 to 2,3-disubstituted butanediols-1,4 in nearly quantitative yields. Some 2,3-disubstituted butanediols-1,4 were cyclodehydrated under reduced pressure with KHSO4 to 3,4-disubstituted tetrahydrofurans or acetylated and the diacetyl compounds pyrolyzed at 525°C to 2,3 disubstituted butadienes-1,3. The length of the alkyl chains of the 2,3-dialkylsuccinates and consequently the 2,3-dialkylbutanediols-1,4 ranged from C2 to C16. 2,3-Disubstituted butanediols-1,4, 2,3-disubstituted butadienes-1,3, and 3,4-disubstituted tetrahydrofurans are interesting monomers for polymerization experiments.

Notes: The mechanical properties of the hydrogel membrane of poly(methyl methacrylate-N-vinylpyrrolidone) were studied for the purpose of making soft contact lenses for extended wear. The dependence of tensile fracture energy, flexibility, and recovery from deformation on the water content and thickness of the hydrogel membrane was studied. Reducing the thickness of a lens was found to exert a more advantageous effect than increasing its water content on maximizing the tensile fracture energy under the condition of an adequate supply of oxygen to the cornea through the contact lens. As long as its water content is controlled between 63 and 78%, the contact lens made of poly(methyl methacrylate-N-vinylpyrrolidone) has the flexibility on the same order as that of conventional soft contact lenses of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). The rate of recovery from deformation increases with water content, and the residual elongation is negligible in the range of water content over about 70%. It is concluded that practical requirements for use of these contact lenses, determined by these three mechanical properties, can be satisfied at the same time if the water content of the contact lens is adjusted at about 70%.
