Notes: 1. A single oral dose of mefenamic acid significantly depressed plasma thyroxine (T4) within 3 h in man. Similarly, mefenamic acid depressed plasma T4 within 3 h in thyroidectomized, T4-maintained rats.2. Plasma free fractions of T4 and tri-iodothyronine (T3) increased significantly after a single oral administration of mefenamic acid in man. In vitro addition of mefenamic acid to plasma also increased the plasma free fraction of T4.3. Three times more T3 was excreted into urine after an acute administration of mefenamic acid.4. In vitro conversion of T4 to T3 by liver homogenate was stimulated when T4 was displaced from plasma binding protein by mefenamic acid.5. Pituitary content of T3 increased when mefenamic acid displaced T4 and T3 from the binding protein. Simultaneously, thyrotropin (TSH) secretion in response to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) was completely blocked by mefenamic acid.6. Prolactin release in response to TRH and luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) release in response to luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LH-RH) were not affected by mefenamic acid.7. It is concluded that mefenamic acid displaces T3 and T4 from their plasma binding protein and more T4 and T3 are available to peripheral tissues for excretion, degradation and TSH regulation.

Notes: 1. Fresh thyroid slices obtained from normal pigs contained prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) and prostacyclin (PGI2, measured as the end metabolite, 6-keto PGF1α), but the concentrations of PGI2 exceeded those of PGE2 and PGF2α. A preferential increase of PGI2 was produced when the slices were exposed to a large dose of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone).2. When thyroid cells were isolated and cultured in the absence of TSH, thyroidal concentrations of PGI2, PGE2 and PGF2α were about equal. When the cells were acutely exposed to a large dose of TSH, intrathyroidal concentration of prostaglandin increased significantly, but the relative concentrations of prostaglandins were not markedly altered.3. When thyroid cells were cultured in the presence of a small dose of TSH, relative concentrations of thyroidal prostaglandins were comparable to those of fresh thyroid slices, as a result of a preferential increase of PGI2 and decreases of PGE2 and PGF2α. Further increase of PGI2 was induced when the cells cultured with TSH were acutely exposed to a large dose of TSH.4. It is concluded that although cells contain PGE2, PGF2α and PGI2, a preferential accumulation of PGI2 is found only when thyroid cells are chronically stimulated by TSH.

Notes: 1. Blood pressure decreased significantly at a late stage of pregnancy in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) but this reduction tended to disappear shortly after delivery. Since acute and chronic administration of progesterone, prolactin and estrone failed to reduce blood pressure, these hormones were not responsible for a fall of blood pressure at a late stage of pregnancy in SHRs. Exogenous administration of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) significantly reduced blood pressure, but endogenous prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), PGE2 and prostaglandin F2α(PGF2α) in plasma did not increase at a late stage of pregnancy.2. Plasma from pregnant SHRs produced a significant reduction of blood pressure in male and female SHRs, but the plasma from male and non-pregnant female SHRs failed to reduce blood pressure. Plasmas from pregnant SHRs were less effective in reducing blood pressure when tested in Wistar Kyoto rats (WKYs).3. It is concluded that a hypotensive factor is circulating at a late stage of pregnancy in SHRs.

Notes: Abstract Effects of spatial variation in the Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction is studied numerically by adopting the Field-Noyes kinetics (Oregonator) and the Zhabotinskii-Zaikin-Korzukhin-Kreitser kinetics. This is carried out for a spatially-discrete model composed ofN equivalent cells interacting through gradient coupling. When the system is near the boundary at which a uniform steady state bifurcates into a limit cycle, it is found with the aid of a perturbation expansion that the above models withN=3 exhibit various types of oscillations depending on the interaction strength between cells. Chaotic characteristics are also observed for a certain region of parameters. It is shown that the ZZKK model withN=2 exhibits a different kind of chaos when the size of the limit cycle becomes sensitive to external parameters, e.g., the concentrations of bromate ion or bromomalonic acid. Although each cell is equivalent, symmetry about cell numbers usually breaks down in a periodic state. It is found, however, that symmetry is recovered for the former kind of chaos, while the latter kind of chaos, there exists an asymmetric chaos as well as symmetric chaos. This has been examined by the time evolution of a certain concentration variable and by its Lorenz plot. In the asymmetric chaos, the Lorenz plot constitutes approximately a one-dimensional map. Furthermore, possible connections of the present limit cycles and chaos with the experiments of Zhabotinskii and Vavilin-Zhabotinskii-Zaikin are suggested.

Notes: Abstract The evaluation of strength of ceramics is an important problem in their application to engineering components. Although fracture initiating from inherent flaws in ceramics is supposed to be analyzed through linear elastic fracture mechanics, the applicability of a plane-strain fracture toughness criterion is in dispute. In this investigation, fracture tests for two grades of sintered silicon nitride were conducted under plane-bending and ring-compression. As the size of inherent flaw observed at the fracture origin was larger, the critical stress intensity factor for the flaw increased and then almost coincided with the fracture toughness. This suggests that ordinary fracture mechanics data should not always be applied directly for predicting the strength of engineering ceramic components. The flaw-size effect was discussed from the point of the applicability of fracture mechanics and the relation with material microstructure.
