Notes: Abstract Response characteristics of human operators in manual pursuit tracking with auditory input are investigated. The human operator hears in his left ear a sound whose frequency varies in proportion to an external random signal. At the same time, he hears in his right ear another sound whose frequency varies in proportion to the angle of a control lever of a potentiometer. The operator controls the angle of the lever so that the frequencies of the sounds in both ears remain as close as possible. The dynamics of the human operator is studied by assuming a “manmachine system” whose input is the external signal and whose output is the voltage of the potentiometer. A learning identification method proposed by one of the authors is used to calculate the weighting function of the man-machine system, which is displayed on a CRT screen in real time. During the tracking task, the skin potential activity (SPA) is measured as an index of arousal of the operator.

Notes: Abstract The morphology of copper electrodeposits from acidic copper sulphate solution was studied at various copper sulphate concentrations and at relatively low overpotentials. The morphology at the various concentrations was not affected much by the current density, but rather by the overpotential. The evolution of 3-D nuclei was found to be a possible cause of the morphological change, since the critical overpotential for the evolution had a nearly constant value despite the concentration change. Unfortunately, a quantitative explanation of the data are not yet possible.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the electrolysis in detail and presents the results of bench-scale tests of the molten metal cathode process for recovering chlorine and ammonia from ammonium chloride, reported in the preceding paper (Part I). A zinc chloride electrolyte, 100 A bench-scale electrolytic cell was found to work well. The electrolytic power consumption for 1 kg zinc chloride electrolysis was calculated to be 1120Whkg−1.

Notes: Abstract The form of the current-time transients for copper electrodeposition from copper sulphate solutions have been calculated based on a surface diffusion model. The transient was greatly affected by whether the ad-species diffusing across the surface was ad-atom Cu0 or ad-ion Cu+, and by the surface coverage by the ad-species. The results imply that it is possible to experimentally test the applicability of the surface diffusion model to copper electrodeposition, to identify the ad-species (Cu0 or Cu+), to estimate the surface coverage and to calculate the parameters related to surface diffusion,D/l 2 andi 0/c 0.

Notes: Abstract The surface diffusion model has been examined by the measurement of current-time transients for copper electrodeposition on to a polycrystalline copper electrode in acidic copper sulphate solution. The results did not satisfy the surface diffusion model criteria. The current-time profiles showed a linear dependence on 1/t 1/2 except at high overpotentials. This behaviour could be explained by a direct incorporation model at hemispherical sites through a hemispherical diffusion layer. A parameter characterizing this model, the number of sites, was estimated to be of the order of 104 cm−2.

Notes: Abstract Various electrolytic methods were examined for recovering chlorine, hydrogen and ammonia from by-product ammonium chloride produced in the ammonium chloride-soda process. Two methods, one based on an aqueous electrolysis and the use of an ion exchange membrane, and the other employing a molten metal cathode were considered possible. This series of papers aims at a detailed description of the latter process, which seems more interesting from the viewpoint of industrial exploitation. This paper briefly reviews the other electrolytic processes before describing the principle of the molten salt process and the study of the reaction between ammonium chloride and liquid metals.
