    Notes: Changes in TBA values, texture, color, taste and odor were monitored at monthly intervals in samples of deboned flesh prepared mainly from under-utilized fish species and stored at −20°C over a 6-mo period. TBA values were assessed at both surfaces and cores of frozen blocks. TBA values increased most rapidly at the surfaces of blocks prepared from dogfish flesh, whereas those of pollock and grey cod increased at a much slower rate. Intermediate increases in TBA values were shown by blocks prepared from red-banded rockfish, shortspine thornyhead, turbot and ocean perch. In all frozen samples tested, surface TBA values revealed a tendency to steadily increase, then decline after 4 or 5 months. Core TBA values remained relatively constant for most species examined. The exceptions were deboned blocks prepared from dogfish and red-banded rockfish, which showed marked increases after 3 months'storage, and a tendency to decline after 4 or 5 months. Core TBA values were always substantially lower than surface TBA values in all samples examined. Deboned flesh prepared from dogfish and turbot were least firm when cooked; those prepared from grey cod and pollock were appreciably firmer and tended to become even more film during storage. Deboned flesh of ocean perch, red-banded rockfish and short-spine thornyhead were intermediate in firmness and remained so during storage. A block prepared from an equal mixture of pollock and red-banded rockfish flesh revealed a very strong tendency to acquire the firmness characteristics of deboned pollock flesh alone. Examination of color changes in stored blocks before and after cooking disclosed the following: During frozen storage, the deboned flesh of pollock became less dark, while those of shortspine thornyhead, turbot and dogfish revealed a gradual shift in the direction of “yellowness.” Assessment of color after cooking showed that deboned samples of pollock, grey cod and the pollock/red-banded rockfish mixture became somewhat progressively darker with extended storage time. Cooked turbot flesh was lightest in color of all species examined. Assessment of odor and taste revealed that no clear relationship could be found between TBA values and taste panel results. There was a general decline in quality over the six months of storage. A marked loss in quality during the second month of storage and another pronounced drop in quality during the fourth month was observed. The panelists did not consider any of the experimental samples to be of the same quality as the pre-test standards.

    Notes: On the basis of experimental conditions employed, the texture of minced fish flesh, after cooking, was found to be highest in flesh obtained from drums equipped with larger orifices. Bone and scale content were considerably lower in minced flesh obtained through drums with narrower orifices. Minced herring flesh obtained through 5- and 7-mm orifices had exceedingly large numbers of long fine bones.

    Notes: Summary Extracellular recordings were made from single on-center optic tract fibres in cats. Light spots of 1 0sec duration were focussed on the center of the receptive field under 1 cd/m2 adaptation luminance by diffuse light. In the maintained discharges at 1 cd/m2, the shape of inter-spike interval histograms (IH) tended to be more skewed in X-fibres than in Y-fibres. As the luminance of the light spot increased, corresponding with the decrease in irregularity of length of inter-spike intervals, the shape of the IHs from X-fibres became symmetrical without noticeable shift of the modal interval peaks. This change was not clear in Y-fibres. The first order serial correlation coefficients showed small negative values in the case of the maintained discharges. These negative values increased with the decrease of the mean intervals of the discharges induced by the light spots, commonly in X- and Y-fibres. The negative correlation of adjacent inter-spike intervals was associated with a change of the shape of some IHs at lower luminances.

    Notes: Summary The effects of partial hepatectomy on the energy charge (ATP+1/2ADP/ATP+ADP+AMP) and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation were studied in normal and jaundiced rats. In normal rats the energy charge levels of the remnant liver decreased only slightly with a rise in the phosphorylative activity of the mitochondria at an early stage after hepatectomy, and then rapidly returned to normal. In jaundiced rats subjected to the common bile duct ligation the energy charge levels of the liver decreased to approximately 0.800 from 0.849 of normal value, though their mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation was within normal limits. In jaundiced rats the energy charge levels of the remnant liver after partial hepatectomy decreased markedly without a return toward normal. The mitochondrial phosphorylative activity increased to only about 50% of hepatectomized normal rats after partial hepatectomy. More than 70% of jaundiced rats died within 24 hours after partial hepatectomy. It is suggested that jaundice inhibits an enhancement of ATP generation to provide sufficient energy for high energy demand rather than the energy-requiring biosynthetic process in an early process of liver regeneration.

    Notes: Summary In anesthetized albino rabbits, electric stimulation of vestibular nerve branches innervating semicircular canals produced not only reflex contraction in certain extraocular muscles, but also a transient relaxation in others. From relaxing muscles was recorded a slow muscle potential that reflected depression of spontaneous spike discharges in muscle fibers. When recorded monophasically, spontaneous spikes of muscle fibers were superposed to form a direct current potential, and depression of the spikes resulted in a transient reduction of this direct current potential, i.e., the slow muscle potential. The slow muscle potential was correlated to the postsynaptic inhibition induced in oculomotor neurons through the vestibulo-ocular reflex arc for the following reasons; its latency was compatible with that of the IPSPs recorded from oculomotor neurons; it was removed by severing axons of the inhibitory second-order vestibular neurons; it was blocked by intravenous injection of picrotoxin as were the IPSPs in oculomotor neurons. By recording slow muscle potentials, a specific canal-muscle relationship for the vestibulo-ocular reflex inhibition of oculomotor neurons was shown to be complementary to that obtained for the vestibulo-ocular reflex excitation.

    Notes: Summary In anesthetized albino rabbits, ampullary branches of the vestibular nerve were stimulated electrically. Prominent and stable reflex contraction was induced in extra-ocular muscles by applying single current pulses of relatively long duration, 3–5 msec. Survey with a glass microelectrode revealed that, during application of relatively wide pulses to a canal, primary vestibular fibers discharged impulses repetitively at a rate as high as 300–1400/sec and that after being transmitted across second-order vestibular neurons these impulses built up summated EPSPs in oculomotor neurons, large enough to trigger off motoneuronal discharges. From each semicircular canal, prominent reflex contraction was evoked selectively in two muscles; from the anterior canal in the ipsilateral superior rectus and contralateral inferior oblique; from the horizontal canal in the ipsilateral medial rectus and contralateral lateral rectus; and from the posterior canal in the ipsilateral superior oblique and contralateral inferior rectus. Acute lesion experiments indicated that signals for this excitation reached IIIrd and IVth nuclei via three different pathways; from the anterior canal through the ipsilateral brachium conjunctivum, from the horizontal canal through the ipsilateral fasciculus longitudinalis medialis and from the posterior canal through the contralateral fasciculus longitudinalis medialis.
