Notes: For 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ)-treated (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Oz[(Bi,Pb)-2223] super- conductors, a superstructure which can be described as 2a0×2b0×c0 has been observed by electron diffraction. Superconductivity is virtually destroyed in the TCNQ-treated (Bi,Pb)-2223 cuprate. Superconductivity (with Tc up to 110 K) may be recovered for a TCNQ-treated sample by being annealed in flowing oxygen gas. Then the 2a0×2b0×c0 superstructure is found to disappear. This suggests that the superstructure may be caused by an ordering of oxygen vacancies. High resolution transmission electron microscopic observations reveal that the oxygen vacancies reside not only in the CuO2 sheets, but also likely in the SrO sheets. A model for the superlattice in both CuO2−x and SrO1−y sheets is proposed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In a recent study, it was shown that by partially substituting Mo with W in the double-perovskite Sr2FeMoO6−w system, the magnetoresistivity can be enhanced. [K.-I. Kobayashi, T. Okuda, Y. Tomioka, T. Kimura, and Y. Tokura, J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 218, 17 (2000).] In order to explain the increase in the magnetoresistivity a series of W-substituted Sr2Fe(Mo1−xWx)O6−w samples with 0≤x≤1 was synthesized. Upon increasing the W content, the samples began to exhibit coexistence of paramagnetism and ferrimagnetism at 300 K. Signatures of antiferromagnetic ordering appeared around TN(approximate)50 K for x≥0.6. In samples with 0.7≤x≤0.8 a broad peak was observed in the magnetoresistance data at temperatures corresponding to the Néel temperature. The peak was found to have its origin in the colossal magnetoresistance effect. The W-substituted samples were partially ferrimagnetic and therefore also exhibited the tunneling-type magnetoresistance, which is characteristic of pure Sr2FeMoO6−w. The coexistence of the two types of magnetoresistance effect is responsible for the enhancement of the overall magnetoresistance value. A slight enhancement in the magnetoresistance values around 300 K for the strongly W-substituted samples was found to be related to a second colossal magnetoresistance peak related to the para- to ferrimagnetic transition at Tc. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The occurrence of negative magnetoresistance (MR) in semiconductive BaSmFe2O5+w double-perovskite samples is demonstrated. A peak in the MR value was observed at the Verwey–type transition temperature. The transition signifies the charge separation of the Fe2.5+ fluctuating mixed valence state into high-spin Fe2+ and Fe3+. The samples were ferrimagnetic with a Curie temperature of ∼710 K. Upon oxidizing/reducing the samples the size of the MR peak and the temperature at which the peak occurred varied. The largest MR value observed was 1.4% at 7 T. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electrical resistivity (ρ) and thermoelectric power (S) were measured for NaxCo2O4 samples with various Na contents (x). A highly precise control of Na nonstoichiometry was facilitated by optimizing the synthesis procedure. With increasing x, the absolute value of ρ monotonically decreased, while the value of S increased. For the x=1.5 sample, S reached a value as high as ∼120 μV/K (at 300 K). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this letter evidence for the formation of a valence-fluctuation state of iron, formally denoted as Fe2.5+, is presented. The system under study is the Sr2FeMoO6−w double perovskite, known for exhibiting a very large magnetoresistance. Samples of Sr2FeMoO6−w were synthesized by means of an encapsulation technique utilizing an Fe getter technique and characterized by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. From 5 K to room temperature the Mössbauer spectrum is dominated by a component with hyperfine parameter values between those expected for high-spin Fe3+ and high-spin Fe2+. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Although it is known that the compositions of low-molecular weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GSs) are important factors for bread-making quality of wheat, it is still not clear which LMW-GSs confer improved bread-making quality and how those LMW-GSs interact with high-molecular weight (HMW) GSs. Using a hard red winter wheat line with good bread-making quality and a Japanese wheat cultivar with poor quality as well as their progeny we identified LMW-GSs associated with the bread-making quality. One such LMW-GS, KS2, which had a molecular weight of 42 kDa and was allelic to HS1, was associated with bread-making quality. Furthermore, by using four recombinant inbred lines with different HMW-GS and LMW-GS combinations, KS2 and HMW-GS 5+10 showed interaction effects on the bread-making quality. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (Page) analysis showed that KS2 consists of two protein components and that HS1 is composed of three components. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of the five components were identical to the most frequently analysed sequence of LMW glutenin components.

Notes: Expression of the EP4 receptor, a prostaglandin (PG)E2 receptor subtype, as well as disease suppression by the administration of a selective EP4 agonist (ONO-AE1-329) was investigated in the colorectal mucosa of rats with dextran sodium sulphate (DSS)-induced colitis. Rats were given drinking water containing 3% DSS for 2 weeks. Expression of EP4 receptor mRNA was barely detectable under normal conditions according to reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). By 1 week after the initial administration of DSS, the receptor mRNA was strongly expressed. After ONO-AE1-329 was administered intracolonically to rats with DSS colitis for 7 consecutive days, erosion and ulceration decreased. Peripheral white blood cell (WBC) counts became less elevated. Interleukin (IL)-1β and growth-regulated gene product/cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (GRO/CINC-1) concentrations in colorectal mucosa were lower than in colitis control group (IL-1β: 12.8 ± 4.6 and 30.8 ± 6.2 µg/mg protein, P 〈 0.05; GRO/CINC-1: 15.5 ± 3.0 and 39.2 ± 5.4 µg/mg protein, P 〈 0.05), and the expression of the corresponding cytokine mRNA was strongly suppressed. IL-10 concentration was higher than in control group (14.5 ± 1.7 and 7.9 ± 1.2 µg/mg, P 〈 0.05), and the mRNA was more strongly expressed. These results suggest that the EP4 receptor is important in colonic inflammation, and that PGE2 suppresses DSS colitis at least partly via the EP4 receptor and the above cytokine changes. Intracolonic administration of selective EP4 agonist might have therapeutic applicability in inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis.

Notes: We previously reported that intracolonic administration of enprostil, a prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2) analogue, had therapeutic effects on acute colitis induced in rodents by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). In addition, production of growth-regulated gene product/cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant-1 [GRO/CINC-1; an interleukin(IL)-8 like cytokine] was suppressed in the inflamed tissues. In the present study we used a human colon cancer cell line (HT-29) to investigate enprostil effects on the IL-8 production of intestinal epithelial cells stimulated by various stimulants. In a MTT assay, concentrations of enprostil 〉10−5M had cytotoxitic effects on HT-29 cells. Furthermore, 10−6 M enprostil suppressed IL-8 production in HT-29 cells, SW620 and CaCo2 stimulated with interleukin-1β (IL-1β) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), but did not suppress this response when cells were stimulated with tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α. These results suggest that enprostil affects a point in the pathway between the IL-1 receptor or LPS receptor and nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB), without affecting the pathway between the TNF receptor and NF-κB, with the latter factor being required for the IL-8 gene transcription. The therapeutic effect of exogenous enprostil on DSS colitis may involve the inhibition of IL-8 production in colonic epithelial cells stimulated by IL-1β or LPS.

Notes: The effect of CoO addition into Y-TZP (Yttria doped Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals) was studied on the evolution of its sintering ability, grain size, grain boundary structure and mechanical properties. The doping of a small amount of CoO effectively reduced the sintering temperature. A small amount of CoO up to ~ 0.3 mol% was effective for the suppression of grain growth, but the addition of 1.0 mole % resulted in an enhanced grain growth. The hardness and toughness of the CoO doped TZP were about the same as those of undoped TZP. Furthermore, despite the grain refinement, CoO doped TZP did not exhibit improved mechanical properties. Thismay be suggesting that CoO dopant had weakened the grain boundary strength
