Notes: Individuals suffering from classical migraine report an astonishing diversity of migraine auras. A frequently reported symptom is a visual hallucination known as fortification illusion (FI). Here we demonstrate that the typical zig-zag pattern of the FI can be reproduced using experimental data of orientation maps of the primary visual cortex (V1) assuming that a continuous excitation front propagates across V1. We put forward a model in which the cortical neurons within this excitation wave are activated sufficiently to contribute to conscious perception. It is shown that the discontinuous repetitive nature of the zig-zag pattern of the FI can reflect the specific layout of visual cortical orientation maps. Additionally, dynamic features of the FI are predicted based on our model.

Notes: DivIVA from Bacillus subtilis is a bifunctional protein with distinct roles in cell division and sporulation. During vegetative growth, DivIVA regulates the activity of the MinCD complex, thus helping to direct cell division to the correct mid-cell position. DivIVA fulfils a quite different role during sporulation in B. subtilis when it directs the oriC region of the chromosome to the cell pole before asymmetric cell division. DivIVA is a 19.5 kDa protein with a large part of its structure predicted to form a tropomyosin-like α-helical coiled-coil. Here, we present a model for the quaternary structure of DivIVA, based on cryonegative stain transmission electron microscopy images. The purified protein appears as an elongated particle with lateral expansions at both ends producing a form that resembles a ‘doggy-bone’. The particle mass estimated from these images agrees with the value of 145 kDa measured by analytical ultracentrifugation suggesting 6- to 8-mers. These DivIVA oligomers serve as building blocks in the formation of higher order assemblies giving rise to strings, wires and, finally, two-dimensional lattices in a time-dependent manner.

Notes: Summary Chronic oral exposure of mice to Cd++ inhibits cell-mediated immunity of delayed type hypersensitivity induced by sheep red blood cells (SRBC). No effect was detected on humoral immune response to SRBC. Spleen cells derived from mice exposed to Cd++ showed in vitro enhanced response to T and B cell mitogens. These results demonstrate that Cd++ exposure alters the immune system of mice.

Notes: Abstract A girl with hemihypertrophy and hamartomas, now 14 years old, had Wilms' tumor and subsequently developed adrenocortical carcinoma. The occurrence of the two tumors with the signs of an inborn defect of growth control supports the hypothesis that both tumors can be caused by the same etiologic factors, which are also teratogenic. An alternative explanation of induction of the second tumor by previous radio- and chemotherapy is discussed. Possible relationships between our case and the syndrome of Wiedemann and Beckwith are pointed out.

Notes: Summary Application of lead suppressed the delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) of mice induced by sheep red blood cells (SRBC). Inhibition of elicitation of DTH in primary as well as in secondary response was correlated with the concentration of lead in the blood of the mice.

Notes: Summary. We study the Föppl—von Kármán theory for isotropically compressed thin plates in a geometrically linear setting, which is commonly used to model weak buckling of thin films. We consider generic smooth domains with clamped boundary conditions, and obtain rigorous upper and lower bounds on the minimum energy linear in the plate thickness σ . This energy is much lower than previous estimates based on certain dimensional reductions of the problem, which had lead to energies of order 1+σ (scalar approximation) or σ 2/3 (two-component approximation).

Notes: Abstract K-, L andM-shell ionization cross sections have been measured for 23 elements, 12≦Z≦92, after bombardment with relativistic electrons, 15≦E 065MeV, by means of high resolution semiconductor detectors and a recently developed gas-scintillation proportional counter. For constant electron bombarding energyE 0 the ionization cross sections follow a power law dependence,σ∽Z −α, and forE 0=50MeV we deducedα =2.45±0.02 for theK shell andα=3.00 ±0.09 for theL shell. The observedZ dependence exhibits significant systematic deviations from theoretical predictions which exceed the experimental values up to 15 % at lowZ elements for theK shell and on the average about 11% for theL andM shell. The same behaviour of too low experimental values, i.e. an overestimation by the theory, is observed for the energy dependence of the cross sections for all shells. A scaling behaviour describing theZ andE 0 dependence for allK-, L andM-shell data points is observed which also predicts the experimental values by other groups at lower and higher energies correctly. The comparsion of the measuredLΒ/Lα, andLγ/Lα intensity ratios for highZ elements with the values obtained by other groups in the energy range 0.3≦E0≦1,000 MeV exhibits an increase with bombarding energy that cannot merely be explained by the energy dependence of the subshellionization cross sections for theL shell. An attempt to explain this effect with the change of the Coster-Kronig transition probability is described.

Notes: Abstract. One- and two-component bistable reaction-diffusion systems under external force are considered. The simplest case of a periodic forcing of cosine type is chosen. Exact analytical solutions for the traveling fronts are obtained for a piecewise linear approximation of the non-linear reaction term. Velocity equations are derived from the matching conditions. It is found that in the presence of forcing there exists a set of front solutions with different phases (matching point coordinates $\xi_0$ ) leading to velocity dependencies on the wavenumber that are either monotonic or oscillating. The general characteristic feature is that the nonmoving front becomes movable under forcing. However, for a specific choice of wavenumber and phase, there is a nonmoving front at any value of the forcing amplitude. When the forcing amplitude is large enough, the velocity bifurcates to form two counterpropagating fronts. The phase portraits of specific types of solutions are shown and briefly discussed.
