Notes: Summary. We study the Föppl—von Kármán theory for isotropically compressed thin plates in a geometrically linear setting, which is commonly used to model weak buckling of thin films. We consider generic smooth domains with clamped boundary conditions, and obtain rigorous upper and lower bounds on the minimum energy linear in the plate thickness σ . This energy is much lower than previous estimates based on certain dimensional reductions of the problem, which had lead to energies of order 1+σ (scalar approximation) or σ 2/3 (two-component approximation).

Notes: Summary Electron microscopic studies of thin sections of filaments, knots, resettes, gonidia, and gonidial-forming filaments of Leucothrix mucor were carried out. The cell wall is typical of gram-negative bacteria, with a double outer layer of variable thickness, a single thin middle layer which is probably peptidoglycan, and a double inner layer which is the cell membrane. The transverse septa of these filaments show two peptidoglycan layers, and no clearly demarked outer layer. During gonidial formation, there is a gradual rounding up of the cells, and the transverse septa become part of the gonidial wall. The cell membrane contains many invaginations, both along the outer wall and along the transverse septa. Thin sections through rosettes show the holdfast as material which is a heavily-staining amorphous material peripheral to the outer wall layer. Sections through knots show highly contorted cell walls, closely appressed. Fibrillar nuclear material, ribosomes, and storage granules can be seen within the cytoplasmic matrix.

Notes: Summary The growth requirements of Hyphomicrobium vulgare NQ and MEV, as well as of 8 other isolates of hyphomicrobia were studied. A variety of factors was found to significantly influence both rate of growth and final yield of cells. Optimal for growth were: 1. a medium containing manganese, molybdenum, calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphate buffer, 2. methanol, urea, methylamine or formamide as a carbon source, 3. nitrate (for H. vulgare NQ and MEV), ammonia (for the new isolates), or urea as a nitrogen source, 4. agitation by stirring, vigorous aeration, and 5. darkness (light was found to be inhibitory). Both, oligocarbophilic growth and the formation of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate as a storage product, were taken into account in determinations of growth.

Notes: Summary The deoxyribonucleic acids of 70 hyphomicrobia were examined at equilibrium in neutral CsCl density gradients. The guanine plus cytosine (%G+C) content was estimated to range from 59.2 to 66.8% G+C. The strains could be divided into three groups with different base composition of their DNA; 61.0±1.1%, 64.1±0.6%, and 66.5±0.6% G+C. The values are compared with those for the base composition of DNA of a number of phototrophic, budding bacteria.

Notes: Summary Ag/BSCCO-2223 phase tapes were prepared with a new plastic deformation cycle. Starting from the hot extrusion of composite billets, hundreds of metres of tape 0.15×3 mm were obtained by drawing and rolling the extruded bars. The cross-section, monofilamentary with a central Ag insert, is quite regular along all the length. Samples from 30 cm to 100 cm in length were heat-treated at different temperatures between 830°C and 480°C in Ar+10% O2 atmosphere. Electrical-transport properties were tested at 77K.J c of 3000 A/cm2 were usually achieved after first heat treatment. The superconducting properties were also tested by magnetic measurements using a vibrating sample magnetometer.

Notes: [Auszug] Fig.1,a-i illustrate the nature and sequence of the cytological changes accompanying cell division. It was observed that karyokinesis occurs well in advance of cytokinesis and that transverse cell-wall formation occurs by the annular centripetal growth of an inner lateral portion of the cell wall. ...
