    Notizen: A successful pregnancy in a woman with Turner's syndrome with a 45, X/46,XX karyotype is described. The literature contains reports of a total of nine pregnancies in seven women with a 45,X karyotype and 56 pregnancies in 23 women with mosaicism and a 45,X cell line, as well as a 46,XX and/or 47,XXX cell line. Fifteen of the latter 56 pregnancies ended in spontaneous abortion (27 per cent), and four ended in the delivery of a stillborn child; 12 of the 37 liveborn infants (32 per cent) had a physical or mental abnormality, and 8 (22 per cent) had a chromosome abnormality. Three had Down's syndrome, and five had a 45,X cell line. Due to the relatively high (8 per cent) incidence of Down's syndrome among liveborn infants of women with Turner's syndrome, amniocentesis for fetal karyotyping should be advised.

    Notizen: Twenty-one patients suffering from the premenstrual syndrome were each studied during three menstrual cycles. After a control cycle, bromocriptine and placebo were given during the luteal phase of the cycle in a random double-blind cross-over manner, each patient serving as her own control. The dosage of bromocriptine was 2·5 mg twice daily. Serum prolactin levels were found to be equal during the follicular and luteal phases, except when reduced by bromocriptine. Serum progesterone and oestradiol-17-β were within normal ranges, and did not change during treatment. Medication considerably improved all the premenstrual symptoms, but mastodynia was the only one where bromocriptine was significantly better than the placebo.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Résumé On a évalué par des tests utilisant des disques de feuilles les réactions alimentaires de deux espèces oligophages,Phyllotreta nemorum etP. undulata, et de deux espèces monophages,P. armoraciae se nourrissant de raifort,Armoracia rusticana, etP. tetrastigma, se nourrissant de cressonnette,Cardamine amara. Toutes ces espèces s'alimentent uniquement sur des plantes contenant des glucosinolates. On a préparé des extraits d'un certain nombre de ces plantes pour déterminer s'ils avaient un effet inhibiteur de l'alimentation. Il y a une bonne corrélation négative entre l'acceptabilité de la plante et l'effet inhibiteur de l'alimentation des extraits chezP. nemorum, mais les espèces monophages rejettent certaines plantes qui ne contiennent pas d'inhibiteurs de l'alimentation. Des cucurbitacines provenant d'espèces d'Iberis ont été identifiées comme étant des inhibiteurs alimentaires pourP. nemorum, et des glycosides cardiaques provenant deCheiranthus et d'Erysimum ont un effet semblable surP. undulata etP. tetrastigma. Aussi bien les plantes acceptables que les plantes inacceptables contiennent des glucosinolates fortement stimulateurs pourP. armoraciae etP. nemorum, qui ne peuvent donc reconnaître leur plantehôte uniquement par sa teneur en glucosinolates. Des résultats préliminaires font penser que certains flavonoïdes du radis et du raifort sont des stimulants alimentaires pour ces deux altises.
    Notizen: Abstract Feeding responses of two oligophagous species,Phyllotreta nemorum andP. undulata, and two monophagous species,P. armoraciae andP. tetrastigma, feeding on horseradish,Armoracia rusticana, and large bittercress,Cardamine amara, respectively, have been evaluated by means of leaf disc tests. All species feed only on plants containing glucosinolates. Extracts made from a number of such species were tested for feeding inhibitory activity. There is good negative correlation between plant acceptability and feeding inhibitory activity of extracts inP. nemorum, but the monophagous species reject some plants which do not contain feeding inhibitors. Cucurbitacins fromIberis species have been identified as feeding inhibitors toP. nemorum and cardiac glycosides fromCheiranthus andErysimum toP. undulata andP. tetrastigma. Both acceptable and unacceptable plants contain highly stimulatory glucosinolates toP. armoraciae andP. nemorum, and the beetles are not able to recognize their host plants solely by their content of glucosinolates. Preliminary results suggest that certain flavonoids from radish and horseradish are feeding stimulants to the two flea beetle species.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Wind induziert positive anemotaktische Reaktionen von frisch geschlüpften, noch nicht gefütterten Weibchen des Kartoffelkäfers. Diese Reaktionen werden verstärkt durch flüchtige Verbindungen verschiedener Solanaceen, nämlich Solanum tuberosum, S. nigrum, S. luteum, S. dulcamara, S. lycopersicum, Nicotiana tabacum, Capsicum annuum und Petunia hybrida und eine Nichtsolanacee, Tropaeolum majus. Brassica oleracea, B. pekinensis, Raphanus sativus und Phaseolus vulgaris waren in dieser Hinsicht neutral. Ungefütterte Postdiapause-Kartoffelkäfer reagieren ebenfalls auf flüchtige Verbindungen von ungeschädigten, getopften Kartoffelpflanzen. Es wird geschlossen, daß die geruchliche Orientierung den Kartoffelkäfer vorwiegend zu Solanaceen-Arten leitet. Sobald sich ein Kontakt ergibt, werden weitere Schritte in der Wirtspflanzenwahl erfolgen.
    Notizen: Abstract Wind induces positive anemotactic responses of unfed newly-emerged female Colorado beetles. These responses are enhanced by the volatiles of several solanaceous species i.e. Solanum tuberosum, S. nigrum, S. luteum, S. dulcamara, S. lycopersicum, Nicotiana tabacum, Capsicum annuum and Petunia hybrida, and a non-solanaceous species, Tropaeolum majus. Brassica oleracea, B. pekinensis, Raphanus sativus and Phaseolus vulgaris are neutral in this respect. Unfed post-diapause Colorado beetles also react to the vapours of undamaged potted potato plants. It is concluded that the olfactory orientation will mainly lead the Colorado beetle towards solanaceous species. When contact results, further steps in host plant selection will occur.

    Notizen: Summary A survey of alcohol prices and consumption, delirium tremens and mortality due to chronic alcoholism from 1911 to 1975 shows (a) a close association between alcohol duty, the price of different types of alcohol and consumption, and (b) a close correlation between the amount of alcohol which can be bought for an average one-hour salary, and consumption. During the forties, approximately 10cl akvavit could be obtained for an average one-hour salary, but in 1975 this had increased to 40 cl, and the 5 bottles of beer which could be bought for an average one-hour salary in the forties and fifties had increased to 14 bottles. During the same period, consumption expressed as 100% alcohol increased from approximately 2.5 to 9.31 per person per year, and the frequency of delirium tremens rose to more than 10 times the frequency in the forties und early fifties. The association between the frequency of delirium tremens and chronic alcoholism is stressed. One of the essential causes of the remarkable increase in alcohol consumption by approximately 400% from the forties to 1975 has most probably been the approximately 400% increase in purchasing power concerning alcohol in relation to income. An alcohol policy with intensive information, research and a well-planned alcohol duty policy with relatively heavy duties on distilled spirits and more moderate duties on beer and wine is recommended. The amount of akvavit, which can be bought for an average one-hour salary, should be reduced considerably from the present 40 cl to as near as possible the level of 10 cl, as was the case in the forties when alcohol diseases such as delirium tremens, liver cirrhosis and mortality from chronic alcoholism in Denmark were minimal, compared with what they are at present. On the background of these recommendations one step in this direction was taken by the Danish government in the fall of 1977, and the previous steep increase in alcohol consumption has not only been stopped, but changed to a decrease from 9.3 1 100% alcohol per person during 1976 to 9.0 1 in 1977.

    Notizen: Summary Collagenase isolated mouse pancreatic islets were maintained in tissue culture for up to 5 months in a culture medium buffered with Hepes and the pH varying between 6.8 and 7.6. The amount of insulin released into the medium and the insulin response to glucose and glucose plus theophylline were measured during the culture period. It was found that islets cultured at pH 7.2 maintained the ability to release insulin into the medium for at least 5 months, which was longer than islets cultured at the other pH values. During the first weeks, the islets cultured at pH 7.6 had a higher response to both glucose and glucose plus theophylline than islets cultured at the other pH values, but later they lost their insulin releasing ability.

    Notizen: Summary This study was performed to evaluate whether L-leucine is able to relieve the structural and functional alterations previously described in pancreatic islets exposed in vitro for a prolonged time to a subnormal glucose concentration (3.3 mM). It was found that both the impairment of secretion and the decreased rate of biosynthesis of insulin characteristic, of islets cultured for one week in 3.3 mM glucose were prevented by adding 15 mM L-leucine to the culture medium. Furthermore, the rates of tritiated water production and glucose or leucine oxidation were significantly enhanced after culture in the presence of L-leucine. The rate of DNA synthesis as estimated by the incorporation of tritiated thymidine was, however, unchanged by the presence of L-leucine in the culture medium. Leucine cultured islet cells displayed ultrastructural signs of high functional activity. A detailed morphometric examination revealed fewer but hypertrophic mitochondria. The present results suggest that L-leucine can replace glucose in several respects as a long-term stimulus of the pancreatic B-cells, possibly by acting as a metabolic substrate.
