Notes: Summary The purification of a substance which protects mitochondrial activity against its decay in association with various cerebral pathologies, and the effect of this substancein vitro andin vivo have been mentioned. Defatted egg albumin was hydrolyzed with pronase, and diafiltrated through mesh, to obtain fractions of molecular weight less than 5,000. The diafiltrate was further fractionated using Sephadex G-25 column chromatography, and a fraction which had a protective action against the decay of mitochondrial DNP-ATPase activity was gathered. This digested egg albumin (DEA 5,000 S) showed no immunological reaction and seemingly penetrated well through the cell membrane. DEA 5,000 S prevented the decay of DNP-ATPase activity and swelling of brain mitochondria during agingin vitro. Also, the administration of DEA 5,000 Sin vivo shortened the duration of unconsciousnees and reduced EEG abnormalities in rats subjected to hypoxia in a special chamber filled with N2 gas. It is suggested that this Digested Egg Albumin has a marked action in restoring the function of metabolically impaired brain.

Notes: Summary Previous serological studies strongly suggested Akabane virus to be the etiologic agent of epizootic abortion and congenital arthrogryposis-hydranencephaly in cattle, and this view was further corroborated in this study by the isolation of the virus from an aborted fetus in an epizootic of the disease and from a fetus extracted from a cow which was suggested by serologic tests to have a recent infection with the virus. The latter fetus had histological changes of encephalomyelitis and polymyositis, and specific antigens of Akabane virus was shown by the immunofluorescent technique in brain tissues as well as skeletal muscular tissues. The virus was recovered from various fetal tissues and fluids, and in relatively large amounts from brain, spinal cord, cerebral fluid, skeletal muscles and fetal placenta. The intracranial inoculation of suckling mice, 1–2 days of age, was the most sensitive system for Akabane virus isolation and Hm Lu-1, a continuous cell line from hamster lung, seemed almost as sensitive as suckling mice.

Notes: Summary In the outbreak of abortions, premature births, stillbirths and congenital arthrogryposis-hydranencephaly (AH) syndrome in Japan during the summer through winter of 1972–73 and 1973–74, precolostral sera from calves with congenital AH syndrome and normal calves were tested for neutralizing antibodies against some arboviruses,i. e. Akabane, Aino, Getah and Japanese encephalitis (JE) viruses. The incidence of antibody for Akabane virus was very high in calves with AH syndrome (49/59 or 83 per cent) as compared with normal calves (3/11 or 27 per cent), indicating an intimate correlation between the AH syndrome and precolostral anti-Akabane antibody. Three stillborn fetuses also had anti-Akabane antibody. On the other hand, no precolostral serum antibody for the other viruses was detected in any of the calves tested. The mothers of these calves, normal and with AH syndrome, had anti-Akabane antibody in high percentages (44/52 or 85 per cent and 7/8 or 88 per cent), whereas a few of the mothers had antibodies for the other viruses. Serological surveys indicate a wide dissemination of Akabane virus in epizootic areas during the summer months of 1972 and 1973. Thus, 8 groups of cattle in epizootic areas showed high rates of seroconversion for Akabane virus during the 1972 or 1973 summer. Very high incidences of Akabane antibody were shown among cattle in epizootic areas but extremely low incidences in near-by non-epizootic areas. The geographic distribution of anti-Akabane antibody among cattle throughout the country in the 1973 spring generally agrees with the pattern of case distribution in the 1972–73 outbreak. All these findings strongly suggest that Akabane virus is the etiological agent of the outbreaks. Further studies are needed, particularly isolation of the virus, demonstration of infection with the virus in lesions by immunofluorescence and production of intrauterine infection by experimental infection of pregnant cows.

Notes: Summary An asymmetric ESR signal and an outer doublet signal centered atg=2.00 produced in human tooth enamel by X-irradiation have been studied over a temperature range from liquid helium temperature to 380° K. The line shape of the asymmetric signal for an enamel crystallite is Lorentzian at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the integrated intensity of the asymmetric signal suggests that the signal follows a singlet-triplet model with the exchange interaction of 0.022 eV. Below about 60° K the asymmetric signal becomes broad as the temperature is decreased. The ENDOR line of the asymmetric signal shows that there exists interaction between the centers and protons. The temperature dependence of the integrated intensity of the double signal is analogous to that of the asymmetric signal.

Notes: Abstract Taking the relative distanceR and the deformationδ of each nucleus as the collective variables, we solve the two dimensional coupled dynamical equations of motion with friction in the framework of the linear response theory. In solving the equations of motion, we approximately replace the inertia tensor with the hydrodynamical one and use the modified liquid-drop one as the collective potential energy. As the frictional coefficients we use the microscopically calculated ones in the previous paper. The calculation is done for the reaction of28Si+20Ne, in which the incident energy of20Ne is 120 MeV. Results show that our microscopically calculated friction gives the large value of energy dissipation which amounts to the “completely damped” collision. Besides it, growths of the oblate deformation in the entrance channel and the prolate deformation in the exit channel are clearly seen. They give a large influence on the time development of the energy dissipation. We compare our calculated results with the experimental data for the reactions of 120 MeV20Ne with27Al. The agreement between them is found to be reasonably good.

Notes: Abstract We present a realistic calculation of the frictional coefficients for28Si+20Ne system using the two-center shell model on the basis of the linear response theory. Adopting the center separationR and the deformationδ as collective variables we study the dependence of frictional coefficients γ RR , γ Rδ and γδδ on those variables, for various values of the neck parameterɛ, the temperatureT and the smearing widthΓ. The direct application of the linear response theory to the two-center potential gives non-vanishing friction for the simple translational motion of the two fragments even when they are far apart. A method to avoid this energy dissipation is proposed and is used in the calculation. Results show that the form factor of the frictional force is surface-peaked and the peak becomes lower as the prolate deformation or neck formation increases. Temperature dependence is mild, but is not negligible. We compare our γ RR and γδδ with other models.

Notes: Summary Both acetylcholine and a Ca-ionophore, A23187, are comparatively strong stimulants of eccrine sweat secretion in vitro. Nevertheless, the contraction of the secretory coil was seen only after stimulation with acetylcholine but not with alpha or beta adrenergic drugs or with A23187. It was thus inferred that the myoepithelial contraction may not be playing an indispensable role in the overall process of eccrine sweat secretion.
