Summary Longitudinal resonant vibrations are means to determine Young's modulusE of cylindrical bars with high accuracy. Mathematical relations between modulusE, Poisson's ratiom, size and weight of bar, and the resonant frequencies measured are established by the theory of longitudinal vibrations. This theory is developed and described for bars with and without additional loads at the ends in three stages (simple theory, Rayleigh's approximation, extended theory). Additional loads are needed to transmit vibrations of polymer and other non-magnetic samples electromagnetically. The ranges of validity of the three stages of the theory are discussed with reference to the ratio of diameter to length, the Poisson's ratio, and the additional loads of bars. Stress components and deformations as well as the shape of a vibrating bar are calculated.
