Description / Table of Contents:
The mechanism of the 9-phenylacridine-photosensitized polymerization of methyl methacrylate in benzene in presence of diethylene glycol diethyl ether as hydrogen donor is investigated. The polymerization process is very complex, because u. v. irradiation of 9-phenylacridine rapidly leads to the formation of products, which partly inititate of inhibit the polymerization. Within the strongly inhibited initial phase of the polymerization only low moleculear poly(methyl methacrylate) is produced (Mv〈30 000). As inhibitors react the relatively stable 9-phenylacridinyl radical and 9,10-dihydro-9-phenylacridine generated from the radical by hydrogen abstraction. After the inhibiting substances have lost their efficiency due to incorporation into the polymer, a strong increase of the polymerization rate is observed, which can be attributed to the products formed from 9-phenylacridine. These are 9-alkyl-9-phenylacridanes, where the alkyl group either can be a hydrogen donor rest or a poly(methyl methacrylate) chain.
Notes:
