Notes: The effects of the calcium antagonist, nifedipine, on uterine activity induced by prostaglandins F2α (PGFZ2α) and E2 (PGE2) were studied in women undergoingtherapeutic midtrimester abortion, and in patients with a missed abortion in the 16th to 27th week of pregnancy. In the five subjects receiving intra-amniotic PGF2α (25 to 40 mg) for midtrimester abortion, nifedipine (30 mg orally) decreased uterine activity from a mean of 372 to 203 Montevideo Units. The effect on the intensity of the contractions was pronounced; frequency and basal tone were little affected. In patients with missed abortion, uterine contractions were induced by extra-amniotic application of PGE2 (0.5 to 1.5 mg) in a viscous gel. The activity was often more irregular than that in the women receiving intra-amniotic PGF2α. However, nifedipine (30 mg orally) had a marked inhibitory effect on the uterine contractions. It is concluded that nifedipine can be used for treatment of uterine hyperactivity induced by prostaglandins. Combined treatment with β2-adrenoceptor stimulants might be considered.

Notes: The effects of the calcium antagonist nifedipine on uterine activity and lower abdominal pain were studied during the first menstrual day in 10 women with severe primary dysmenorrhoea. Intrauterine pressure was recorded at three different levels by means of microtransducers. Nifedipine, 20 to 40 mg given orally, within 10 to 30 minutes effectively reduced the myometrial activity and relieved the pain. A moderate increase in heart rate, and a transient facial flushing were noted. In some patients receiving 30 or 40 mg this was associated with a slight headache. Otherwise no side effects were observed. It is suggested that calcium antagonists can be used to treat primary dysmenorrhoea and other conditions in which an inhibition of uterine activity is desirable.

Notes: The effect of the beta receptor stimulator, terbutaline, on uterine activity induced by intra-amniotic injection of prostaglandin F2αor hypertonic saline was investigated in 20 patients undergoing therapeutic abortion in the second trimester. Intrauterine pressure was recorded, and the basal tone, intensity and frequency of contractions and “total” activity (expressed in Montevideo Units or MU), were measured. Uterine activity was higher in the prostaglandin group (mean value 393 MU) than in the hypertonic saline group (mean value 238 MU). However, terbutaline, infused at a rate of 5 to 20 μg/minute, decreased the activity by approximately the same absolute amount in the two groups to a mean value of 214 MU in the prostaglandin group and to 68 MU in the saline group. In some patients of the saline group, terbutaline completely inhibited uterine contractions. Basal tone, which was high in the prostaglandin group (mean value 28 mm Hg) decreased to a mean value of 17 mm Hg during terbutaline infusion. In the saline group the mean value for basal tone decreased from 10.5 to 7.5 mm Hg. It is concluded that uterine activity, induced by intra-amniotic injection of prostaglandin F2αor hypertonic saline, can be inhibited by terbutaline. The mechanisms of action for prostaglandins and hypertonic saline are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Selected yeasts classified as Candida sake van Uden et Buckley were examined for their physiological, morphological and immunological properties and their DNA relatedness. Candida maltosa Komagata, Nakase et Katsuya is herein recognized as a species separate from C. sake. Candida maltosa was distinguished from C. sake and from C. tropicalis by insignificant DNA reassociation. In addition, C. maltosa was distinguished from C. sake by its higher maximal growth temperature and lower guanine plus cytosine content of its DNA and from C. tropicalis by its failure to utilize soluble starch for growth and its resistance to cycloheximide. The species C. cloacae and C. subtropicalis are placed in synonymy with C. maltosa.

Notes: Abstract Areas of lunar surface magnetic field are observed to ‘mirror’ low energy electrons present in the normal lunar space environment. The ambient electrons provide, in effect, a probe along the ambient magnetic field lines down to the lunar surface for remote sensing of the presence of surface fields. This probe, unlike direct measurement by the magnetometer, does not require low altitude or a very stable (magnetotail) ambient field to provide a mapping of regions of occurrence of such fields. Use of the on-board vector magnetometer measurements of the ambient magnetic field orientation allows accurate projection of such mapping onto the lunar surface. Preliminary maps of the lunar surface magnetic areas underlying the orbit of the ‘Particles and Fields Satellite deployed from Apollo-16’ have been generated, obtaining 40% coverage from partial data to demonstrate feasibility of the technique. As well as providing independent verification of areas such as Van de Graaff already discovered in the magnetometer data, these maps reveal many previously unreported areas of surface magnetism. The method is sensitive to fields of less than 0.1γ at the surface. Application to the full body of available PFS-1 & 2 electron data is expected to provide complete mapping of the lunar surface for areas of magnetization up to latitudes of 35–40 deg. The surface field regions observed are generally due to sources smaller than 10–50 km in size, although many individual regions are often so close together as to give much larger regions of effectively continuous mirroring. Absence of consistent mirroring by any global field places an upper limit on the size of any net lunar dipole moment of less than 1010 γ km3. Much additional information regarding the magnetic regions can be obtained by correlated analysis of both the electron return and vector magnetometer measurements at orbital altitude, the two techniques providing each other with directly complimentary measurements at the satellite and along the ambient field lines to the surface.

Notes: Abstract This article presents some of the new and important particle features that have been detected in the energy range ∼ 1 keV to ≳290 keV by the ISEE-1 and -2 spacecraft near the magnetopause, bow shock, and the interplanetary space. Only examples of data from the first few orbits, when the spacecraft were on the front side, are shown.
