Notes: Summary Eight healthy aged subjects were administered 1.2 g of chlormethiazole by constant-rate intravenous infusion. The disposition of the drug was found to be multi-exponential in character. Fits of plasma level-time data to two- and three-compartment open models were assessed with the aid of statistical tests. For three of the subjects the experimental data were adequately fitted to a two-compartment pharmacokinetic model, however a three-compartment model was necessary to fit the data observed for a further four subjects. An anomalous chlormethiazole plasma concentration-time curve was obtained for the remaining subject. The disposition half-life of chlormethiazole was 8.49±3.28 h and the plasma clearance was 16.14±5.00 ml/min/kg. These values were significantly different to those reported earlier for young adult subjects and the clinical implications have been discussed. The blood/plasma concentration ratio of chlormethiazole was found to be approximately one with some evidence for concentration dependence.

Notes: [Auszug] The first laser pulse measurements on picosecond fluorescence lifetimes used the electro-optical shutter3"5 but the irreproduci-bility of pulse intensity makes this a rather imprecise method. The streak camera6-7 has greatly improved the precision but much of this is lost if photographic recording ...

Notes: The influence of autonomic innervation on stress-induced cardiomyopathy and heart rate changes was analyzed by selective removal of parasympathetic and sympathetic myocardial inputs. Squirrel monkeys with bilateral cervical vagotomy or β-adrenergic receptors blocked by propranolol were studied in shock stress and restraint situations. Because propranolol reduced stress-induced lesions and tachycardia, enhanced sympathetic β-receptor activity was considered responsible for these effects in intact monkeys. No role for increased parasympathetic activity in myocardial pathology was indicated. Enhanced sympathetic activity was also implicated by lesions and tachycardia of vagotomy monkeys. However, vagotomy alone induced myocardial pathology and confounded the effects of shock stress. Stress-induced cardiac arrest in both vagotomy and propranolol monkeys was observed. An imbalance of either autonomic input was suggested to be responsible for this dysfunction. Thus, autonomic innervation was involved in stress-induced cardiomyopathy and heart rate changes.

Notes: Behavioral factors and cardiovascular changes associated with myocardial degeneration and cardiac arrest induced by shock avoidance stress were studied. Pairs of avoidance and yoked squirrel monkeys were exposed to a 24-hr session. Myocardial degeneration and cardiac arrest were more readily induced in avoidance than yoked monkeys. The cardiac lesions were not related to body weight, aggressive behavior, or number of shocks received during stress, but an increased heart rate without hypertension during the first stress hour was more evident in avoidance than yoked monkeys. These cardiac changes were attributed to an autonomic disturbance associated with the response contingencies of the avoidance situation. An autonomic effect also appeared to be involved with stress-induced death. These deaths were characterized by a sudden, severe bradycardia without initial hypotension and cardiac arrest which was attributed to either parasympathetic activation or sympathetic inhibition. While heart rate decreased in all monkeys, stress-induced death followed only in monkeys which gave up and stopped contending with the stress. Thus, stress-induced myocardial changes and death were related to autonomic disturbances precipitated by psychological stress.

Notes: The uptake and distribution of inorganic mercury (HgCl2) within higher plants (Pisum sativum and Mentha spicata) was examined using solution culture and radiotracer techniques. Plants were found to tolerate an external level of 1 mgHg/kg of solution but both physiological and biochemical processes were affected at 5 mgHg/kg and 10 mgHg/kg. The uptake of Hg into plants grown in hydroponic solution was a function of external concentration. Over the concentration range considered the accumulation of Hg in the roots was linear on a log-log basis although the uptake of the element into the shoots appeared to be two-phased. The distribution of Hg in plants was asymmetrical with much greater amounts of the element in the roots than the shoots. Although the level of Hg increased generally in plant tissues with increasing external levels, the proportion retained in the roots, relative to the shoots, was constant (approximately 95%). Two binding characteristics of the Hg within plant tissue were detected. A major proportion of Hg was tightly bound, being unaffected by treatment with ethanol and hydrochloric acid. The remaining Hg in the tissue was removed by either water or hydrochloric acid treatment. Cell fractionation indicated that the major binding component of Hg in plant tissues was the cell wall.

Notes: Abstract An integral representation is developed for the distribution of tangential traction during adhesive contact between obliquely loaded elastic spheres of similar materials. It is shown that adhesive conditions arise at the beginning of an impact between two spheres at low angles of incidence or after an initial period of gross slip for larger angles. A differential equation is developed and solved, describing this phase of the impact.

Notes: Abstract A general proof is given of the theorem that, if a continuous rigid punch indenting an elastic half space is heated, the separation of the solids will increase and part of the contact area will be lost. It is also shown that if the punch is convex, the contact area cannot be multiply-connected.
