Notes: Summary This paper reports a rare malformation syndrome which is observed in two sibs (brother and sister) of a family. It consists of nearly symmetric reductive defects of the limbs, flexon contractures of various joints, cleft lip and cleft palate, multiple minor abnormalities including capillary hemangioma of the forehead, hypoplastic cartilages of ears and nose, micrognathia, intrauterine growth retardation, and possibly mental retardation. Chromosomes of both parents and propositi are normal. Genetic data suggest autosomal recessive inheritance.

Notes: Abstract Fifteen-month water temperature data of vertical profile of the two lakes, Padamsagar and Ranisagar of the semi-arid region in Western Rajasthan are discussed. A remarkably wide variation of temperature from the surface to the bottom during the summer, particularly in the month of June (12°C at Padamsagar and 9.5°C at Ranisagar) resulted in a clear-cut thermocline which hindered distribution of dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide and nutrients from top to bottom. However, circulation existed during the isothermic period (the winter). This is the first record of the occurence of a Thermocline in any lake or impoundment in India and is supposed to be due to lack of mixing of water because of the lakes are sheltered from wind action by high rocks bounding their eastern and western banks, and to the low surface to depth ratio.

Notes: Abstract Topical application of sterilizing doses of apholate causes haematological changes in the adults ofDysdercus koenigii. The normal males have less haemolymph (13–16 μl) than females (18–37 μl) for the first 120 hr of adult life. Apholate treatment significantly reduces the haemolymph volume of both the sexes. There are significantly more haemocytes in circulation in adult females than in males. The total haemocyte count shows an initial increase up to 48 hr, but later indicates a drastic reduction in the treated males and females. The plasmatocytes of the treated insects are found to reduce in numbers and the prohaemocytes become the predominant type, while in controls the plasmatocytes are the major type of haemocytes.

Notes: Abstract A cooling fin attached to a cylinder of circular cross section is considered. We obtain sharp upper and lower estimates for the maximum heat dissipation under the constraint that the total weight of the fin should not exceed a given bound. It is assumed that the boundary of the cylinder has a constant temperature and that Newton's law of cooling holds.

Notes: Abstract In seven recently diagnosed and untreated patients with tobacco amblyopia the light and dark adapted electroretinograms were recorded together with visual acuity, central fields and the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test. After 3 months treatment with injections of hydroxocobalamin all these tests were repeated. An improvement in visual acuity resulted in all cases. A significant reduction in the Farnsworth-Munsell total error score of the seven patients was noted (p 〈 0.01). A significant increase in the amplitude of the light adapted b-wave of the ERG was found (0.01 〈 p 〈 0.02) following the course of hydroxocobalamin injections. No other significant changes in the ERG were demonstrated. It is suggested that the ERG changes demonstrated an improvement in an abnormal biochemical state in those bipolar and perhaps Müller cells of the inner nuclear layer of the retina which make electrophysiological connections chiefly with foveal cones.
