Notes: Terbacil (5-chloro-6-methyl-3-butyluracil) residues did not accumulate in peach orchard soil after seven consecutive annual spring applications of the herbicide at the rate of 4.5 kg/ha although carry-over of terbacil from year to year occurred. Terbacil was lost by degradation and leaching and the time required for a 50% decrease in surface soil concentration was 5–7 months in the sandy loam soil. The major part of the residues was found in the upper 15 cm of the soil profile and smaller amounts were detected to a depth of 60 cm. Terbacil leached readily in prepared columns of sandy loam soil in proportion to the amount of water added. The residual levels of terbacil in the orchard were phytotoxic to oats planted 3 years after the last application.

Notes: In a field experiment on an organic soil, a pre-emergence application of paraquat at 2–24 kg a.i. (active ingredient)/ha was made to a plot on which onions and lettuce were grown; and similar broadcast applications of linuron, both with and without carbofuran, at two field rates, to plots on which carrots were grown. Paraquat generally increased the bacterial and actinomycetal populations while linuron inhibited the same but enhanced the numbers of fungal propagules, although it decreased the proportion of soil penicillia in the population. The overall effect of linuron was not changed by the admixture of carbofuran. However, the changes in microbial populations by either herbicides were not substantial enough to make gross or lasting differences in levels of available N and P, and in the CO2 evolution rate.

Notes: Summary A method is described for the determination of terbacil residue in soil. The herbicide residue is extracted with 1.5% NaOH, partitioned into an organic phase and subsequently cleaned up by passing through a Florisil column. Extract is analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography using a63Ni electron capture detector. The procedure has a sensitivity of about 0.01 ppm, based on a 20 g sample. The method was used for the analysis of terbacil residues in the field treated soil samples.

Notes: Summary A method is described for determining paraquat residues in lettuce, carrots and onions. The procedure is based on the extraction of the sample with 5N H2SO4 and catalytic hydrogenation of the acid extract. This is followed by column cleanup on alumina and subsequent determination by gas chromatography. Recoveries of paraquat added to lettuce, carrots and onion at 0.5, 0.1, and 0.05 ppm were between 75 to 86%, with maximum standard error of 4%. The lower limit of this method is in the 0.05 ppm range.

Notes: Summary A general solution of the equilibrium equations is obtained for a half-space with a stress-free boundary and arbitrary but axisymmetric distribution of body-forces and body-couples in the interior of the half-space. Few particular cases have been investigated in detail. The stresses, displacements and rotation have been obtained at the boundary of the half-space. Numerical results have been displayed graphically to illustrate the micropolar effects.

Notes: Coordination complexes of the type MM″(NCS)4 · xL M = Ni(II), Fe(II), Zn(II), M″ = Hg(II), Zn(II), x = 2, 4, 6 and L = nicotinamide (nia), 3-cyanopyridine (3-cpy), 4-cyanopyridine (4cpy), 4-aminopyridine (4apy), isonicotinic acid hydrazide (inh), 2-aminopyrimidine (2apm)l have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic moment, infrared and electronic spectral studies. Molar conductance data of NiZn(NCS), complexes are equivalent to 1:1 electrolyte. The infrared spectral studies indicate that only bridged thiocyanate groups are present in the complexes of the type NiHg(SCN)4 · 4L [L=3 and 4cpy, inh] and FeHg(SCN)4 · 2L [L = nia, 2apm], whereas both bridged and terminal thiocyanates are present in the complexes of the type NiHg(SCN)4 · 4L [L = nia, 3apy and ZnHg(SCN)4 · 2(inh). BOHR magneton values and electronic spectral data indicate an octahedral environment around nickel and iron in their complexes. Symmetry and group theory have also been used to establish the structure of the complexes.
