Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 49 Nieren männlicher LBNF1-Ratten wurden auf männliche Lewis-Ratten transplantiert.
Notes: Summary 49 kidneys of male LBNF1-rats were transplanted into male Lewis-rats. BN-rats were used as a source of antigen. Control animals survived 16.1 ± 1.8 days. 5 recipients were pretreated with donorspecific living cells, 7 with semisoluble and 5 with low dosage of soluble antigen. The living cell-pretreatment showed the best effect for the active enhancement, the soluble antigen the least. The pretreatment with 6 mg protein/kg bw. caused the sensibilization of recipients. At the time of transplantation lymphcytotoxic antibody titers were detected in all recipients with pretreatment of living cells, but no titer in other groups. Renal allografts with elevated postopertive titer were rejected rapidly.

Notes: Summary Whiptail lizards (Cnemidophoms tigris) were collected from fenced irradiated, fenced control, and unfenced areas near Mercury Nevada. No changes in allele frequencies at 26 allozyme loci could be ascribed to irradiation or fencing. This species is the most polymorphic and heterozygous lizard so far examined. — Heterozygosity estimates derived from electrophoretic studies on 20 additional species of lizards are compared with Cnemidophorus. A general trend seems to emerge. Fossorial lizards have uniformly low levels of heterozygosity (ca. 1 %). Territorial “sit and wait” predators are intermediate (ca. 5%). Highly vagile apparently nonterritorial lizards are the most heterozygous (ca. 10%). Assuming that this trend does not reflect some of sampling error, two current, non-mutually exclusive hypotheses explain the observed situation: (1) the niche width variation hypothesis predicts, higher variability in populations where individuals are exposed to largescale environmental heterogeneity; and (2) the population size hypothesis predicts that, all other things being equal, vagility would tend to increase the effective population size by reducing inbreeding, which would promote higher levels of genetic variation.

Notes: Summary This report is based upon a retrospective study of a consecutive series of twenty patients who had tuberculosis of the hip in quiescent state. Two patients had only a short history but were included in this study. An interesting feature at the time of operation was that in many cases the bone showed old features of tuberculous disease despite the long history of quiescence. A modification of the Charnley technique is discussed. In addition, details of radiographic assessment before operation, antituberculous drug therapy and the use of Kanamycin in bone cement are given. The complications and results are recorded.

Notes: Summary A two dimensional finite element model was employed for the study of the effect of bone cement thickness on the loading of the stem of the femoral component in total hip replacement. Five thicknesses of cement, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm, and three load directions, 0, 22.5 and 45 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis of the femur, were studied. The finite element stress analysis shows that the maximum tensile stress in the stem is increased as the layer of cement thickens, while the stress in the cement is decreased. The pattern of stress distribution in the stem is similar to that previously described. A cement layer between 3 and 4 mm thick is recommended.

Notes: Abstract A single-parameter form approximating the transition potential in muonic atoms is presented. The single-parameter form yields comparable results with that obtained by the Barrett form in radial moment analysis. The single parameter,β, is isotopically independent and is uniquely defined by the particular transition of a given element.
