Notes: Summary Using a Doppler Mark 500 of ATL we measured the systolic and diastolic velocity of the red cells into the main arteries of the neck (diastolic rate cm/sec) thus approaching the flow in two cases of upper brain stem AVM with a unique drainage into the superior longitudinal sinus through an enlarged vein of Galen and a falcine sinus. Because of the desperate clinical condition of the children it was decided to stop the high blood flow by closing the aspiration coming from the low pressure of the venous system above and below the site of union between the malformation and the superior longitudinal sinus. An intra-operative and post-operative measurement of the diastolic rate showed a radical effect of the closure of the superior longitudinal sinus. The demonstration of this aspirative factor has allowed us to classify an AVM as a haemodynamic push-pull malformation.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between RNA/DNA ratio and egg productivity of adult Paracalanus sp. females was investigated in the frontal area of the Kuroshio current off Kinkazan Island and Boso Peninsula, Pacific coast of Japan in 1989 and 1990, respectively. In the Kuroshio front off Kinkazan Island, the RNA/DNA ratio of females in the surface layer ranged from 3.87 to 6.92 along a transect 8 miles across the front. In the Kuroshio front off Boso Peninsula, the RNA/DNA ratio varied between 5.15 and 7.27 for 32 h in the course of tracking a drifter launched in the front. The RNA/DNA ratio of the females in both frontal areas tended to increase together with ambient chlorophyll-a concentration, and the relationship fitted to Ivlev's formula (P〈0.05). The number of eggs laid in filtered sea-water during 24 h (egg productivity) was also positively correlated with the ambient chlorophyll a concentration (P〈0.05). There was a positive correlation (P〈0.001) between RNA/DNA ratio and egg productivity, and RNA/DNA ratios accounted for about 70% of variation of the egg productivity. Judging from RNA/DNA ratios and female egg productivity in both frontal areas, relatively large physiological or reproductive changes could possibly occur in small temporal and spatial scales in association with change in phytoplankton abundance.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Abstract Moebius syndrome (MS) is described in an infant with central hypoventilation and brainstem calcification. The patient had limb defects and bilateral paralysis of the 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, and 12th cranial nerves. Mechanical ventilation was continued from birth because of shallow spontaneous respiration. Computed tomography revealed brainstem atrophy and four small calcifications restricted to the dorsal portion of the pons and medulla. Prenatal brainstem injury such as ischaemia may have caused MS and central hypoventilation.

Notes: Summary The effect of nicorandil on myocardial perfusion in ischaemic heart disease has been studied using exercise-load Tl-201 myocardial SPECT (Ex-SPECT). Ex-SPECT was carried out in 12 patients with previous myocardial infarction (OMI) and 9 with angina pectoris (AP) before and after administration of nicorandil 15 mg/day, for three or more weeks; % Tl uptake and the washout rate in infarcted or ischaemic areas were calculated from short axial images using the Bull's eye method. In the OMI group, % Tl uptake and washout rates in the infarction areas improved significantly from 52.4% and 0.25 before nicorandil to 60.4% and 0.38 after it. In the AP group, too, % Tl uptake and washout rates showed a significant improvement from 56.9% and 0.10 before to 69.1% and 0.33 after administration. Six subjects who had not received the drug, and who showed negative washout rates, had high improvement rates when nicorandil was administered, suggesting that the drug could increase myocardial perfusion during exercise loading as well as suppressing coronary spasm. Ex-SPECT was done in 4 subjects before and after nicorandil and after subsequent surgical treatment (PTCA or CABG) and the effects of the two therapies were compared. The washout rate was improved from 0.01 to 0.34 by administration of nicorandil, and a notable increase in coronary artery blood flow was achieved compared to the level after surgical treatment, i.e. 0.50. It was concluded that, normal dosages of nicorandil have a powerful direct effect of dilating the coronary arteries without any influence on preload or afterload.

Notes: Summary The effect of AS-4370 on gastric emptying was investigated in healthy adults using 99mTc-DTPA. Single doses of AS-4370 2.5, 5 or 10 mg or placebo were administered to 12 subjects in a controlled, double-blind, cross-over study. Tests were performed twice weekly in each subject. Thirty min after administration of test drug or placebo, each subject swallowed a bun and orange juice containing 200 μCi nuclide. The radioactivity of the gastric content was measured for 40 min and the activity of the residue was expressed as a percentage of count at the initiation of measurements. The percentage radioactivity, AUC and gastric emptying time fitted by a power exponential curve, were analyzed. No significant difference was observed between the three dose levels of AS-4370 and placebo in half emptying time. However, decreases in the percentage of radioactivity with time were noted: 5 mg at 10 to 16 min and 10 mg at 8 to 24 min after the start of recording. Lower AUCs after 5 mg and 10 mg compared to placebo were also found. The half emptying time was also shorter after 5 mg and 10 mg than placebo. There was no difference in these parameters between 2.5 mg and placebo. The results indicate that AS-4370 5 and 10 mg but not 2.5 mg accelerates gastric emptying in healthy adults.

Notes: It is demonstrated, both theoretically and numerically, that the Gibbs–Bogoliubov (GB) thermodynamic variational calculation, developed originally for equilibrium systems, can be applied to a thermodynamic metastable system provided the structure of the reference system, used in this calculation, has the same main features as the metastable system under consideration. Following this, the GB thermodynamic variational calculation, employing the hard-sphere system as the reference system, is used to quantitatively determine the thermodynamic features of the metallic glass transition. Good agreement with observation is obtained.
