Notes: Abstract It has been shown previously that ultraviolet erythema (UV) is partially the result of a local release of prostaglandins. We have studied the effects of different classes of pharmacological agents applied topically to the skin of guinea pigs and have found indomethacin and pirprofen, both prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors, to be highly effective suppressors of UV erythema. Our studies appear to further substantiate that prostaglandin synthesis and release may be the primary mechanistic process in the production of erythema and that the model itself can be predictive of both therapeutic and prophylactic effects of agents against sunburn.

Notes: Abstract Radiation exposure was studied in 327 patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or endoscopic papillotomy taking into account fluoroscopy time and incident area exposure. The mean fluoroscopy time was 238±152 seconds and the incident area exposure 3,730±2,790 R×cm2. These results were compared with standard exposures in upper GI series and colon examinations as found in the literature.

Notes: The properties of mitochondrial ATPase and plasmamembrane ATPase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are compared. The pH dependence differs considerably. At low pH plasmamembrane ATPase is inactivated. High salt concentrations protect the ATPase against acid inactivation. K+ is more effective than Na+. The sensitivity of mitochondrial ATPase towards azide, Dio 9 and oligomycin is far greater than found with plasmamembrane ATPase. There are no indications that the membrane ATPase is involved directly either in monovalent cation uptake or in divalent cation uptake. Sr2+ and Ca2+ do not activate plasmamembrane ATPase and inhibit Mg2+-activated ATPase. The substrate specificity of plasmamembrane ATPase is much greater than the substrate specificity of mitochondrial ATPase.

Notes: It has been shown that addition of phosphate to phosphate deficient yeast gives rise to an immediate increase in the rate of Na+ uptake and an immediate decrease in the rate of Rb+ uptake. In addition, phosphate uptake is enhanced specifically by Na ions presumably by a process with a very high affinity for phosphate with a Km of about 2 × 10−6M at pH 7.2, whereas the Km for phosphate uptake of the Na+ independent process amounts to 1.3 × 10−4M.

Notes: Summary Barley roots fixed with OsO4 containing potassium pyroantimonate showed the presence of several types of electron opaque precipitates in the cells. Thin sections were cut from a region about 1 cm from the root tip and the electron opaque deposits analysed using EMMA-4 with KEVEX Si(Li) energy dispersive analyser. Antimony-containing deposits at the root surface associated with the mucilaginous sheath were found to contain Fe and P, and count ratios suggest constant proportions of these elements in the precipitates. Within the root cells, vacuolar deposits generally contained Os and Sb, but occasional deposits in epidermal cell vacuoles contained some Fe. Fe was also detected in nuclear deposits in endodermal cells. These findings are discussed briefly in relation to the uptake of Fe into plant roots.

Notes: Summary This article evaluates some of the well-known theories of labour demand, with special reference made to macro-economic unemployment problems in the Netherlands. Two fields of problems have been distinguished. The first concerns the formulation of the new goals of economic policy. The second group regards the question of selecting the best fitting, in a statistical sense. As a final resolve, this approach defines that, what ever the ‘best’ theory may be, there clearly exists a negative relation between wage costs and employment in the Netherlands. However, it is also determined that the negative effects of high wage costs are not so large as suggested in the Central Planning Bureau studies, based on a Solow-Robinson model of embodied technological progress.
