    Notes: Abstract It has been shown previously that ultraviolet erythema (UV) is partially the result of a local release of prostaglandins. We have studied the effects of different classes of pharmacological agents applied topically to the skin of guinea pigs and have found indomethacin and pirprofen, both prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors, to be highly effective suppressors of UV erythema. Our studies appear to further substantiate that prostaglandin synthesis and release may be the primary mechanistic process in the production of erythema and that the model itself can be predictive of both therapeutic and prophylactic effects of agents against sunburn.

    Notes: Abstract Rapid, dynamic computed tomography (CT) is essential in scanning the body in order to maintain adequate contrast enhancement during the entire examination. In the case of the liver, this is most critical in order to complete scanning prior to the equilibrium phase when lesions are less conspicuous or may be missed entirely. This technical note describes the application of “cluster scanning” to conventional scanning in order to optimize body CT by decreasing the total exam time.

    Notes: Abstract Background A survey of the Society of Computed Body Tomography/Magnetic Resonance (SCBT/MR) was performed to assess current techniques in liver CT scanning. Methods The study was designed as an update to a study performed in 1987. The survey was distributed to 67 members of the SCBT/MR at 35 institutions. Results Twenty-six institutions responded. As in 1987, none relied solely on noncontrast scans. In 1987, only 54% (12/22) of institutions performed contrast-enhanced scans as their primary technique compared with 73% (19/26) in 1993. Ionic contrast was used exclusively in the earlier study, whereas in the present study 58% used nonionic contrast in the majority of cases and 38% used nonionic contrast routinely. In 1987, 41% performed scans with a power injector compared with 85% in the present study. Enhanced scans were performed during the contrast bolus in 36% of institutions in 1987 compared with 76% in this study. No institution relied on noncontrast scans alone. In the previous study the delay between injection and scanning was variable (0–60 s), whereas in the present study 83% specified a delay of 21–45s. Conclusion Significant refinements in CT technique, wider use of power injectors, utilization of nonionic contrast, and a more critical approach to optimize liver imaging have created a significant impact on the practice of liver CT.

Diese ungewöhnliche histochemische Reaktionsweise, zusammen mit dem Befund, daß Riesenfasern in den Muskeln von erwachsenen Tieren vorkommen, dagegen spricht, daß diese Riesenfasern die klassischen Wohlfart-B-Fasern sind. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Riesenfasern, Streß-Anfälligkeit der Tiere und Muskelpathologie wird besprochen.
    Notes: Summary Giant fibers in porcine muscle have a variable reaction for DPNH-TR, a very negative reaction for amylophosphorylase and a very positive reaction for ATPase. This unusual histochemical reaction pattern, together with the finding that giant fibers occur in the muscle of adult animals, argues against their being the classical Wohlfart B fiber. The association of giant fibers with animal stress-susceptibility and muscle pathology is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The rate of change of internal pH and transmembrane potential has been monitored in liposomes following the external addition of various cation salts. Oleic acid increases the transmembrane movement of H+ following the imposition of a K+ gradient. An initial fast change in internal pH is seen followed by a slower rate of alkalinization. High concentrations of the fatty acid enhance the rate comparable to that seen in the presence of nigericin in contrast to the effect of FCCP (carbonyl cyanide p-(tri-fluoromethoxy)phenyl hydrazone) which saturates at an intermediate value. The ability of nonesterified fatty acids to catalyze the movement of cations across the liposome membrane increases with the degree of unsaturation and decreases with increasing chain length. Li and Na salts cause a similar initial fast pH change but have less effect on the subsequent slower rate. Similarly, the main effect of divalent cation salts is on the initial fast change. The membrane potential can enhance or inhibit cation transport depending on its polarity with respect to the cation gradient. It is concluded that nonesterified fatty acids have the capability to complex with, and transport, a variety of cations across phospholipid bilayers. However, they do not act simply as proton/cation exchangers analogous to nigericin nor as protonophores analogous to FCCP. The full cycle of ionophoric action involves a combination of both functions.

    Notes: Summary Thirteen volunteers received an iv dose of theophylline followed by blood sampling for 8 h to calculate pharmacokinetic parameters. Ten patients with asthma undergoing chronic dosing with slow release aminophylline underwent 12 h of blood sampling to calculate theophylline clearance. Both groups completed an Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) from which was derived scores for neuroticism (N) and extroversion (E). Using multiple regression analysis no independent effect of either N or E score on theophylline clearance or half-life could be demonstrated.

    Notes: Summary Six healthy volunteers received an iv infusion of 317 mg lysine theophylline (equivalent to 197 mg anhydrous theophylline) in order to calculate theophylline clearance by standard methods. They subsequently received a 20 minute inhalation of nebulised lysine theophylline. Serum and salivary theophylline concentrations were measured and all saliva was collected for the first hour. From these concentrations estimates were made of the distribution of theophylline into the blood and saliva with 40% to 94% identified in the blood. Very high salivary concentrations were reached during the inhalation phase with saliva: serum concentration ratios of between 60 and 1600.

    Notes: Summary Twenty volunteers aged between 20 and 57 years were given 197 mg of theophylline (as lysine theophylline) by iv infusion over 5 minutes to test the hypothesis that within the adult age range theophylline clearance declines with age. Samples were assayed for theophylline using the EMIT assay and clearance was determined by standard methods. Clearance values were 0.73 ml/min/kg below age 38 years and 0.75 ml/min/kg at and above age 38 years. Multiple regression analysis using age as a continuous variable showed no relationship between age and clearance.
