Notes: Summary Chemical, X-ray, optical, thermal and microprobe analyses have been carried out on six chlorites from Italian granitoid rocks formed as a result of deuteric action on biotites. The data show that five chlorites, spanning ripidolite-brunsvigite fields, are IIb polytypes and therefore of high temperature origin. Only one sample is a thuringite, Ib (β=90°) polytype, typical of low temperature. The occurrence of this last polytype, never mentioned in the literature from granitoid rocks, suggests a wider possibility for using chlorite polytypism in studying the late magmatic phenomena.

Notes: Summary Middle Triassic volcanic rock outcrops in the Mount Agnello area (Fiemme Valley, Italy) are examined in this study. Chemical analyses based on main and trace elements (Rb, Sr, Zr, Y, Nb) allow this volcanism to be defined as “shoshonitic”. The amphiboles, which occur with thick opacitic rims, were determined as ferroan pargasites. They were often found in volcanites of calcalkaline and/or shoshonitic associations. Consequently, this volcanism can be associated with a newly orogenized area undergoing stabilization. These data support the more recent studies on the mid-Triassic volcanism in the Southern Alps and underline the particular position of this magmatism in the tectonic evolution of this area.

Notes: Abstract We report five children with a soft mass in the neck due to congenital jugular venous ectasia. Three had fusiform dilatation of the internal jugular vein, which in one case was associated with dilatation of the ipselateral external jugular vein. Two children had aneurysmal dilatation of the superficial cervical communicating vein. The first four cases required angiographic studies for final diagnosis. Venography via the femoral vein was most valuable for visualization of the dilated segments of internal jugular veins but failed to show the vascular mass communicating with the superficial vein of the neck. These were best visualized by direct injection of the contrast medium into the vessel. In the fifth case a correct diagnosis was obtained with xeroradiography alone.
