Notes: NH4IO3 shows an abrupt contraction in the direction of spontaneous polarization at 82°C. This anomaly is accompanied by changes in the optical properties and phonon spectra, which were also studied at different pressures. On the basis of the lattice parameters and Raman spectra a probable mechanism is suggested for the phase transition.

Notes: A study of the phase transitions in WO3 crystals by Raman and absorption spectroscopy reveals that WO3 possesses two stable (or metastable) modifications at room temperature, differing slightly but definitely in their physical properties. Measurements of electrical conductivity show that both are insulators at low temperatures and semiconductors at higher temperatures. One is monoclinic and the other triclinic. Both exhibit at lower temperatures discontinuities in their physical properties without accompanying changes in cell parameters.

Notes: Abstract Attention is drawn to the differences in the relative intensities of the reflections of deerite measured on a Guinier photograph and those obtained from diffractometer data (Langer et al., 1977), which were probably collected without taking adequate precautions to reduce the orientation effect. Powder data for deerite, which are in conformity with the structure, are presented.

Notes: [Auszug] A coherent VHP backscatter radar and a proton precession magnetometer (PPM) were used for storm-time observations at Thumba near Trivandrum (dip 56'S; lat, 8.5 N; long, 77 E). The two experimental systems are described elsewhere1*2. Later improvements have enabled us to record the radar digital ...

Notes: Abstract A general method to calculate phase diagrams from the fundamental crystallographic properties has been suggested, using the calcite-aragonite reaction as an example. This procedure requires the measurement of the phonon spectra at different temperatures and pressures, calculation of a reasonable Grüneisen parameter to obtain C p values from the C v values and the consideration of the order—disorder phenomena and its contribution to the Gibb's energy. The remarkable agreement seen between the calculated diagram and that determined experimentally speaks for the reliability of this method.

Notes: Abstract A chemical and X-ray investigation of the Fe-Mg-carpholites of Crete/Greece reveals a large variation in their Fe2+/(Fe2++Mg) ratios (0.68 to 0.05). The lattice constants a and b depend linearly on this parameter, and the magnitude of the effect is comparable to that encountered in pyroxenes. The similar behaviour of the lattice dimensions of both these minerals is explained by comparing their structures and pointing out the salient crystal chemical similarities.

Notes: Abstract The ζ-function of a one-dimensional classical hard-rod system with exponential pair interaction is defined as the generating function for the partition function of the system with periodic boundary conditions. It is shown, here, that the ζ-function for this system is simply related to the traces of the restrictions of the Ruelle's transfer matrix, and related operators to a suitable function space. This ζ-function does not, in general, extend to a meromorphic function.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with mass transfer to a rotating disc electrode (RDE) under pulsed potential and pulsed current conditions. For the case of pulsed potential, a numerical solution is presented to calculate the instantaneous current density for intermediate and large cycle times and an asymptotic solution for short cycle times. The special case of applying a step potential is then presented. The magnitude of the step current for a given transition time is calculated from the numerical solution by Viswanathanet al. for the pulsed current case. Comparison is made between the present results and various approximate solutions from the literature.
