Notes: Transcutaneous scalp oxygen tension (tcPO2) was measured during labour in 40 fetuses, using a modified Clark electrode (Radiometer, Copenhagen). In 24 of the fetuses the recordings were of good quality during the second stage of labour. After delivery the acid-base status and oxygenation of the umbilical cord blood was measured. A correlation was found between the tcPO2 and umbilical artery oxygen saturation (r = 0.56, p〈0.01) and umbilical artery PO2 (r = 0.56, p〈0.01). Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between the area beneath the recorded tcPO2 curve during the last 10 minutes and the umbilical artery pH (r = 0.50, p 〈0.05). The data suggest that continuous transcutaneous PO2 measurement may be of value in monitoring high risk patients during labour.

Notes: We made continuous fetal pH-measurement in 50 patients and showed a good correlation between tissue pH and umbilical artery, umbilical vein and the fetal scalp blood pH. There were practical problems in the use of the glass pH electrode.

Notes: Normal values for fetal scalp tissue pH during labour were determined by using a glass electrode (Kontron-Roche®). A total of 132 recordings was obtained and 84 (64 per cent) were of good quality. After a good quality recording had been obtained, there were 64 infants with an Apgar score of 9 or 10 at one and five minutes after delivery. The 64 recordings showed pH values (Mean ± 2SEM) of 7.38±0.12 six hours before delivery and 7.28±0.12 at the time of delivery. Between the 5th and 55th minutes of the second stage of labour the pH (Mean ± 2SEM) fell from 7.30±0.14 to 7.20±0.13.

Notes: Summary 1. A technique was developed for using a thermistor to record the ventilation of freely movingCordulegaster boltoni larvae. 2. The thermistor recordings show that the ventilation is slow and regular during the resting phase of the circadian cycle and changes in a characteristic way during the various phases of hunting and food consumption. 3. The larvae respond to visual stimuli by interrupting ventilation. Thus this technique can be used as a better measure of distance and time at which a larva detects a stimulus than visual observation. By this measure,Cordulegaster larvae can detect prey objects at a distance of 10–15 cm and an illuminance of 5–10 Lux. To be effective, such stimuli must move at angular velocities of 10°/s or more; otherwise they are ignored. 4. Application of this method extends the range of measurable behaviour of freely moving aquatic insects. In particular, it allows one to establish conditions under whichCordulegaster larvae detect prey even before they respond with a visible movement.

Notes: Abstract Distributions of the (J π=0+, 1+, 2+, 3+, 4+) isoscalar and isovector strength in16O have been calculated in then particle —n hole (n=0, 1, 2) shell model. The isoscalar quadrupole giant resonance comes out fragmentated over eight peaks which exhaust 33% of the EWSR betweenE *=17 and 25 MeV. This result agrees nicely with the recent3He and alpha inelastic scattering experiments. Giant monopole isoscalar (isovector) resonance appears to exhaust more than 50% of the EWSR nearE *=30 MeV (E *=40 MeV). Several collective states of other multipolarities are predicted either near to 30 MeV or between 50 and 60 MeV. The ground state correlations of the 2p2h type give rise to a considerable strength redistributions as compared with the case of the closed shell ground state.

Notes: Pulsed NMR T1, T2, and T1ρ measurements are reported for poly(vinylidine fluoride) (PVF2). The results demonstrate clearly the presence of four relaxation processes, three amorphous and one crystalline. The α relaxation is undoubtedly a crystalline one, while β and γ are both amorphous, in agreement with earlier conclusions from dielectric and dynamic mechanical measurements. The fourth relaxation (β′) observed initially in the mechanical measurements of Kakutani, but undetected in dielectric experiments, has been confirmed in our results and the process is described by an activation energy of 15.1 kcl/mole. Motion of folds on the surface of crystal lamellae is deemed to be the responsible mechanism for the β′ relaxation. Two models have been considered in the interpretation of the α process; rotation of crystalline chains in the vicinity of defects and rotational oscillation of restricted amplitude of all crystalline chains about the main chain axes. Rotation of amorphous chains is a possible mechanism for the γ process while motions of a general nature are responsible for the β relaxation. Our experimental results again indicate that spin diffusion plays an important role in the overall NMR response of the polymer.
