Notes: Protoplasts have been isolated from leaves of shoot cultures of six dihaploid clones of Solanum tuberosum L. (2n = 2x = 24). In the KM medium (Kao and Michayluk 1975), sustained cell divisions were obtained in up to 50% of the plated protoplasts of four clones, whereas only a few divisions occurred in the other two clones. The first mitosis appeared 2–8 days after plating, dependent on the clones. In the clones showing sustained cell divisions, a protoplast titre of about 5 × 103 per ml turned out to be optimal. The culture conditions for protoplasts of one of the poorly growing clones, clone H2 140, have been improved using modified KM media, plating at a concentration of as high as 5 × 104 cells per ml, and subsequent diluting at intervals 5 days. The dilutions were carried out with media containing 0.25% agar. Up to 60% of the plated protoplasts underwent divisions within 10 days under these conditions. After about 15 days, the regenerants were transferred onto media inducing organogenesis. Shoots and roots were formed on modified media MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) and B5 (Gamborg et al. 1968). Plants have been regenerated in four of the investigated clones. Countings of chromosomes revealed a satisfactory stability of the karyotype in shoot culture and protoplast regeneration.

Notes: Summary In a particular experimental series involving anthers from F1 hybrid plants of Secale cereale L., it was possible to induce the formation of 68 microspore-derived plantlets of which 61 were albinos and 7 green. 6 of the albino plants were haploid, whereas most of the others were diploid. All green rye plants were directly diploid and, after extensive screening, proved to be heterozygous. Evidence is presented suggesting that these latter plants arose from unreduced microspores. The significance of this finding is discussed.

Notes: Summary A quick and simple semi-quantitative method of selecting single seeds of rye for their content of 5-alkyl-resorcinols is presented. The resorcinols are extracted from whole, intact caryopses with acetone. Under the conditions described the germination rate is hardly decreased. The single grain method offers especially striking advantages when selffertile inbred lines are used.

Notes: Summary Further progress of studies aimed at increasing production of androgenetic Secale cereale plants via the culture of anthers is described. Two culture media initially developed for rice and wheat anther culture have been shown to have pronounced influence on rye. It has been possible to increase the average percentages of responsive anthers (i.e. those producing embryoids or calluses) from 0.26% to 10% with a maximum in certain experiments of over 40 %. Of nearly 400 plants produced in 1976, 1/4 are green and can be grown further by transfer to potting compost; 3/4 are albino. Stable green haploid lines were present amongst the plants, and after vegetative propagation of the lines representative samples have been treated with colchicine resulting in diploid, triploid and tetraploid plants. The influence of the genetic background of the donor plants on the success rate of anther culture and on the percentage of albino formation is discussed.

Notes: Summary The techniques of microspore and protoplast regeneration starting from dihaploid Solanum tuberosum plants has been improved to such an extent that the production of more than 2000 microspore derived A1 plant lines and of several hundred protoplast derived plantlets has become possible. Further, from the dihaploid Solanum species S. phureja the regeneration of microspores to plants, and from the species S. infundibuliforme, S. sparsipilum and S. tarijense the regeneration of protoplasts to calluses, has been achieved. The plants descending from the two single cell culture systems are compared with reference to phenotypic markers and economic qualities. Some principles characteristic for either microspore or protoplast derived plants are examined and their significance is discussed. The results are compiled into an extended analytical synthetic breeding scheme based on a stepwise reduction of the autotetraploid to the monohaploid level and a subsequent controlled combination to a new synthetic completely heterozygous tetraploid potato.

Notes: Abstract A cooperative electron-phonon system is considered which exhibits a triply degenerate electronic ground state in each unit cell. As a model substance a simple cubic crystal is taken where each Jahn-Teller molecule has an octahedral surrounding. TheT electronic ground state is linearly coupled toe andt type vibrations with thee coupling dominating. By a unitary transformation the electron-phonon system is approximately decoupled. The remaining cooperative electron-electron system displays transport properties which are discussed in terms of a modified Maradudin formalism. Thermal conductivity is calculated by linear response theory. It is shown that in the transformed picture the phonon heat current approximately is independent from the pseudo spin heat current and the total thermal conductivity is given as a simple superposition of both contributions.

Notes: Abstract The thermal conductivity of a cooperativeT−(e+t) Jahn-Teller system with dominatinge coupling is considered and the pseudo spin thermal conductivity is evaluated. A simple cubic crystal is considered, where each Jahn-Teller ion has an octahedral surrounding. Using the correlation function method of Kubo, and the heat current operator of a preceding paper, an expression for the vibronic conductivity is derived. The heat current depends on the order parameter of the system and is given as a function of thee−t coupling ratio. The density of states and the relaxation times of the pseudo spin wave excitations are evaluated by means of a Green function analysis in 2nd RPA. The vibronic conductivity is evaluated for differente−t coupling ratios and its competition with the phonon thermal conductivity is discussed.
