Notes: Manganese-related deep levels in n- and p-type silicon have been investigated by deep level transient spectroscopy and Hall effect. Two electron traps of Ec−(0.12±0.01) eV and Ec−(0.41±0.01) eV, and a hole trap of Ev+(0.32±0.01) eV are found in manganese-doped silicon. The energy levels of these traps correspond to the transitions between four charge states (Mn−, Mn0, Mn+, Mn++ ) of interstitial manganese. An additional donor-type electron trap of Ec−(0.51±0.02) eV is observed in the n-type samples, and the trap can be tentatively assigned to substitutional manganese. Furthermore, an electron trap of Ec−(0.50±0.02) eV is observed for n+p junction samples diffused with manganese in boron-doped p-type silicon. The trap is attributed to the manganese-boron complex, which is formed owing to the pairing reaction of interstitial manganese and substitutional boron. From the investigation of the pairing reaction, the diffusion coefficient DMn of interstitial manganese is determined in the temperature range 14–90 °C. It can be represented by the expression DMn=2.4×10−3 exp(−0.72/kT)cm2 s−1.

Notes: We have studied the feasibility of using carbon as a scanning tunneling microscopy tip material for experiments conducted under electrochemical environments. The tips were found to be stable and durable in acidic or alkaline solution for several hours. The fabricated carbon tips were capable of resolving graphite atoms in electrolyte solution under potentiostatic condition as well as in air.

Notes: Abstract : The role of 3′,5′-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) was investigated in rat pinealocytes. Treatment with dibutyryl cGMP (DBcGMP) dosedependently increased the phosphorylation of both p44 and p42 isoforms of MAPK. This effect of DBcGMP was abolished by PD98059 (a MAPK kinase inhibitor), H7 (a nonspecific protein kinase inhibitor), and KT5823 [a selective cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG) inhibitor]. Elevation of cellular cGMP content by treatment with norepinephrine, zaprinast (a cGMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor), or nitroprusside was effective in activating MAPK. Natriuretic peptides that were effective in elevating cGMP levels in this tissue were also effective in activating MAPK. Our results indicate that, in this neuroendocrine tissue, the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway is an important mechanism used by hormones and neurotransmitters in activating MAPK.

Notes: Two patients presented with the unusual condition of multiple warty dyskeratomas on the scalp. Biopsies of affected skin stained positive with human keratin monoclonal antibodies HKN-6 and -7, specific for cortex and inner root sheath of normal human hair, respectively. Multiple warty dyskeratomas are a rare occurrence and their actiopathogenesis remains elusive. Positive immunohistochemical staining of a lesion with antikeratin antibodies HKN-6 and -7, specific for human hair keratin, suggests a follicular origin for warty dyskeratoma.

Notes: We describe a 23-year-old Japanese man with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed massive cutaneous mucinosis. He was diagnosed with SLE when he was 11 years old. Prednisolone therapy (30 mg/day) was initiated and reduced to 10 mg/day 3 months later: the SLE had been well-controlled with this dose of prednisolone for 12 years. However, infiltrated erythematous plaques developed on the middle-lateral area of his back at 17 years old and progressed to erythematous and elastic soft tumorous masses over 20 cm in diameter at 23 years old. Biopsies of the lesions on the nape revealed massive mucin deposition. Topical injection with hyaluronidase decreased the lesion. This cutaneous mucinosis can be distinguished clinically and histopathologically from papular and nodular mucinosis associated with SLE. The present case might be an unusual clinical variant of cutaneous mucinosis associated with SLE.

Notes: A case of primary low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure syndrome with galactorrhea is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated diffusely enhanced meninges, edematous brain, and enlarged pituitary gland. Coincidental enlargement of pituitary gland and edematous brain due to low CSF pressure compressed the pituitary portal system. The 1ow-perfused anterior lobe of pituitary gland would be the mechanism of galactorrhea.

Notes: Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the interfacial reactions and crystallographic structure in high-temperature sputtered Al alloy/TiN system. An intermediate layer and semispherical precipitates were observed as the reaction products during high-temperature sputtering at 500 °C. Electron diffraction analysis indicated that the intermediate layer consisted of hexagonal AlN and cubic TiN. Semispherical precipitates were also found to consist of tetragonal Al3Ti. Additional energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer analysis suggested that the intermediate layer was formed by the diffusion of Al atoms into the TiN film. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two types of spiral growth, single and double spirals, of C60 epitaxial films on a KBr(001) substrate were observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). These single and double spirals were found on films grown at different rates. All spiral islands show the threefold symmetry of the face-centered-cubic (fcc) structure. In the case of single spirals, many fringes were observed in three equivalent [11¯0] directions on the fcc (111) surface. From the AFM images, we concluded that the growth process of these spirals can be explained by the classical crystal growth theory of Burton, Cabrera, and Frank and that screw dislocations form without any direct influence of the substrate. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
