Notizen: Abstract. A rainbow trout with a malignant lymphoma of probable thymic origin showed direct spread of the tumour to the gills, metastases to the liver and head kidney, and the presence of abnormal circulating lymphocytes. The cells of the tumour possessed plasma membrane immunoglobulin detectable by immuno–fluorescence. Examination of the tumour cells by transmission electron microscopy revealed no evidence of virus associated with the cells. Infectious viruses could not be detected in the tumour tissue, and the tumour was not transmissible by injection of live tumour cells into young rainbow trout. Attempts to establish the tumour in long–term culture were unsuccessful.

Notizen: Abstract. After fry of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, had been infected parenterally with Herpesvirus salmonis, moribund or freshly dead specimens were examined histopathologically. The virus produced a generalized infection, the first signs of which appeared after 2–3 weeks. Visceral and respiratory organs and the heart showed major pathological changes, and pancreatic syncytia were judged to be pathognomonic. Kidneys were prime targets for the virus and showed the highest levels of infectivity; lesser amounts of virus were present in the stomach, liver, and intestine. The virus did not spread by contact to produce clinical disease nor could disease or viral replication be induced by parenteral inoculation of yearling Oncorhynchus nerka (Walbaum).

Notizen: Abstract. Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) was diagnosed in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, at the Hagerman, Idaho, State Fish Hatchery. Wild fish from Riley Creek, one of the hatchery water supplies, were infected with PKD organisms. Clinical signs, gross pathology and histopathology of affected fish were typical of those reported for PKD in salmonids from European hatcheries. In addition to lesions normally seen, we observed a severe vasculitis and occlusion of renal and hepatic vessels. Ultrastructure of the PKD organism and possible inclusion body production sites are described. The disease outbreak was complicated by the presence of other infectious diseases. This is the first recorded outbreak of PKD in North America.

Notizen: Flow curves of mozzarella cheese at 30, 40, 55, and 70°C were determined by a capillary piston-driven rheometer. The shear stresses and rates were calculated using the Bagley and Rabinowitch correction formulae. The standard test and correction procedure was applicable to melted mozzarella cheese, but not to other types of cheese (notably cheddar) in which slippage and other effects played a dominant role.

Notizen: Abstract Cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) were exposed for 90 days in the laboratory to a refined oil collected from the North Platte River at a seepage site below the American Oil Company refinery at Casper, Wyoming. Fish were exposed to five concentrations and a control, and seven biological responses (survival, growth, gill pathology, liver pathology, caudal fin erosion, caudal fin pathology and swimming performance) were correlated with water concentration and tissue accumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons. Fish in the highest water concentration, 183μg/L total oil, accumulated tissue concentrations of 4.6μg/g total naphthalenes and responded adversely to all seven biological measurements. Cutthroat trout in the lowest water concentration, 24μg/L total oil, had a mean tissue concentration of 1.2μg/g total naphthalenes, but their response was similar to that of the control fish to all seven biological responses. Fish exposed to 39μg/L water concentration accumulated tissue concentrations of 2.7μg/g and responded negatively to 2 of the 7 biological measurements. Therefore, the maximum safe limit for this oil and cutthroat trout is between 24 and 39μg/L.

Notizen: A three-dimensional reconstruction of the rod profiles seen in inner and outer rat incisor enamel was made from serial 1 μ cross sections of a decalcified upper incisor. The enamel rod was found to be an elongated structure which travelled incisally relative to its origin and ran continuously from the dentino-enamel junction to the enamel surface. The rod was divisible into an inner and outer enamel portion. The inner enamel portion began at the dentinoenamel junction and travelled incisally for about 20 μ with either a mesial or lateral tilt towards the outer enamel. The outer enamel portion of the rod was straight and ran incisally for about 60 μ as it gradually approached the enamel surface.Inner enamel portions of rods were arranged in rows parallel to the cross sectional plane of the incisor. All the rods in each row were tilted either mesially or laterally such that individual rods of adjacent rows crossed each other at 90°. Outer enamel portions of rods were not arranged in rows but all passed incisally parallel to one another.

Notizen: Longitudinal sections through the incisors of the rat show a continuous layer of ameloblasts on the labial surface of the tooth. This layer contains the entire sequence of developmental stages in enamel production. Using 1 μm Epon sections from the upper and lower incisors of 100 gm male rats, the ameloblast layer was divided into three main zones which were themselves subdivided into regions: (1) Presecretory zone which includes (a) region of ameloblasts facing pulp, itself comprising a posterior portion (upper 172 ± 35 μm; lower 187 ± 37 μm) and an anterior portion (upper 458 ± 28 μm; lower 503 ± 36 μm); (b) region of ameloblasts facing dentin (upper 1210 ± 81 μm; lower 1381 ± 90 μm). (2) Secretory zone, (a) region of inner enamel secretion (upper 2573 ± 141 μm; lower 4274 ± 160 μm); (b) region of outer enamel secretion (upper 1211 ± 60 μm; lower 868 ± 72 μm). (3) Maturation zone (upper 7335 μm; lower 10615 μm), (a) region of postsecretory transition; (b) region of maturation proper, consisting of portions of ameloblasts with striated border and portions of ameloblasts with unmodified apices; (c) region of pigmentation; (d) region of reduced ameloblasts. These regions are readily identified using clear cut morphological criteria. Length measurements made on a group of 40 rats established the reproducibility of this classification. Therefore, this classification will be used as a basis for future studies of cell population kinetics.
