    Notes: Abstract Using the reactor-produced lanthanum isotope 57 137 La, the hyperfine structure (hfs) of the transition La I, 5d 2 6p z 4 G 11 2/0 −5d 2 6s a 4 F 9/2, λ=6250 Å and La I, 5d 2 6p z 2 H 11 2/0 − 5d 2 6s a 2G9/2, λ=6266 Å were measured by means of a Fabry-Pérot interferometer. The nuclear spin I (137La)=7/2, already theoretically estimated by earlier authors, was confirmed. The nuclear magnetic dipole moment μI(137La)=+ 2.690 (6) n.m. and the electric quadrupole momentQ(137La)=+ 0.26 (8) · 10−24 cm2 were determined from the ratios of the hfs interaction constantsA andB of137La and the natural139La.

Notes: Abstract The radioactive barium nuclide140Ba (T 1/2=12.8 d) has been separated chemically from fission products of uranium. The scheme of the carrier-free separation is described. The isotope shift in the barium II resonance line 6p 2 P 1/2-6s 2 S 1/2,λ=4934 Å has been measured by means of a pressure scanned Fabry-Pérot interferometer. The resultΔv(140Ba-138Ba)=−39.3 (3.2)mK has been used together with the remeasured isotope shift values of138Ba,136Ba, and134Ba to calculate the change of the mean square radius of the nuclear charge distributionδ〈r 2〉. The results are compared with data for isotonic nuclides of neighbouring elements.

Notes: Abstract Using the reactor-produced lanthanum isotope 57 137 La, the highly enriched rare 57 138 La and the stable 57 139 La, the isotope shift has been measured in five lines of the La I-spectrum with the aid of a pressure-scanned Fabry-Pérot interferometer. The isotope shift data obtained show surprisingly large specific mass effects, arising from configuration mixing of levels with a 4f electron involved. The changes in mean square charge radiusδ〈r 2〉 of these nuclei extracted from the experimental isotope shift constants Cexp are compared with the corresponding values for the isotonic barium nuclei, where similar anomalies in the isotope shifts occur.

Notes: Abstract Optical isotope shifts of four lines in the atomic spectrum of xenon have been measured using enriched samples of all stable xenon isotopes. The spectrograms were recorded with the aid of a pressure-scanned Fabry-Pérot interferometer and analysed by digital data techniques. The measured isotope shifts are shown to be self-consistent by means of a King plot. An estimate of the specific mass effect is given and the changesδ 〈r 2〉 of the mean square radius of the nuclear charge distribution are extracted from the measured shifts. These changesδ 〈r 2〉 are discussed in terms of the nuclear deformation parameterβ 2. The results for the deformation of the stable even xenon isotopes are shown to be in good agreement with the systematic of deformation found for the neighbouring elements from Coulomb excitation experiments.

Notes: Abstract Several La I transitions were investigated by means of optical interference spectroscopy. AllA-values of the levels of the configuration 5d 6s 6p withJ=9/2, 7/2, and 5/2 were measured. Applying sum rules, the one-electrona-valuea 6s (5d 6s 6p) was derived. It is shown that a promising interpretation of the measuredA-values cannot be done without properly considering core-polarization and configuration interaction with adjacent configurations.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure of the transition Ag I, 4d 9 5s 22 D 3/2-4d 105p 2 P 1/2, λ=19,372 Å has been investigated by means of a photoelectrically recording Fabry-Pérot interferometer using separated isotopes. Evaluating the hfs-pattern by a digital analysis the following values for the magnetic dipole interaction constants have been obtained: $$A_{3/2}^{(109)} (d^9 5s^2 ) = - 12.11(6)mK; A_{1/2}^{(109)} (d^{10} 5p) = - 6.72(10)mK.$$ Using the knownA-factor of the other level of the configurationd 9 s 2 and the values of the Ms anomalies of the levelsd 9 s 22 D 5/2 andd 10 s 2 S 1/2 together with our result, the influence of the core polarization on theA-factors of the configurationd 9 s 2 is discussed. Assuming that the used relativistic correction factors are correct, the influence of the core polarization cannot be due only to the unpaireds-electrons of the core, but must be described by the three-parameter hfs-Hamiltonian given by Harvey. Consequences for calculating the quadrupole moments from hfs data are mentioned.
