Notes: Abstract The problem of the stability of usual Hartree-Fock calculations of neutron matter with effective two-body interactions is investigated by using the second order variational equations. Sufficient conditions for instability are derived, which can be checked easily for a given effective potential. Numerical calculations are performed and neutron matter is found to be unstable against density fluctuations.

Notes: Abstract Equations of state of cold neutron matter are calculated by the method of unitary transformations for a hard-core and a soft-core potential. Equilibrium configurations are constructed in the Newtonian and the general relativistic theory of gravitation. It is found that Newtonian treatment to a certain extent gives very good results. On the other hand neutron star models are strongly affected by the nuclear forces used in the equation of state.

Notes: Abstract Neutron stars and incompressible fluid spheres are considered in the Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory. It is shown that their parameters (mass, radius, surface redshift) do not differ appreciably from the corresponding Einstein values even for ω = 0and various semi-realistic equations of state. For incompressible fluid spheres the differences between both theories of gravitation are most pronounced. We find an apparent instability of the incompressible fluid.
