Photoelectron Spectroscopic Investigation of the intramolecular π,π-Interactions in endo-Tricyclo[4.2.1.02,5]nonadienes. Homoconjugation with CyclobutanesThe photoelectron spectra of 7-14have been measured. The first two ionization potentials (IP) of 7 correspond to π-orbitals, which are separated by only 0.3 eV. Through-space- and through-bound-coupling nearly cancel each other The assumption of the sequence π+ 〉 π- in 7 is strongly supported by the spectrum of 10. The fact that IP1 (7) ≍ IP2 (10)is compatible with a π-bonding and σ-antibonding mixing of the exocyclic π-orbital of 10 with π+. The interaction between Walsh- and π-orbitals in 13is nearly vanished, presumably because of the greater distance as compared to 19. The homoconjugative ability of the cyclobutane ring has been studied. In all but one of the cases the effects are less distinct with the four-membered than with the three-membered rings, as judged by the two observables Δε = ε(es) - ε(ea) and ε(π). To give an explanation for the different photochemical behaviour of 4, 7, and 18, the excited states of 7and 18have been explored by means of a CNDO/2-CI-procedure.
Notes:
