Notes:
Abstract Due to diffusion and thermal diffusion processes, distinct concentration differences are formed close to a heated or cooled plane wall in an initially homogeneous gas mixture. These can be determined by a simple approximation theory based on the fact that the temperature profile practically is not influenced by the separation. The separation increases with temperature difference and difference in molar mass of the gas components. With decreasing pressure and increasing distance from the leading edge of the wall the thickness of the concentration boundary layer increases. Comparison with a numerical solution of the differential equations for a two-component system shows that results obtained from the approximation theory are very accurate.
