Notes: Abstract A multifluid-model is introduced for the momentum transport of a downwards directed turbulent two-phase-flow consisting of a gaseous core and a liquid film (core-film-flow) with wavy interface. The flow field is subdivided into a basic film region, a wavy region and the gaseous core. The phase distribution is represented by the incomplete Gamma-function, and the friction between the phases is given by a friction factor depending on a dimensionsless pressure gradient. From the solution of the governing equations the pressure drop of the core-film-flow is obtained as a function of the liquid- and the core-Reynolds-number. The calculated pressure drop is in good agreement with that obtained from empirical correlations.

Notes: Abstract The film theory by Ackermann can be applied to simultaneous heat and mass transfer processes, if the mass flux normal to the wall is induced by diffusion. Since this condition mostly is not fulfilled when condensing vapor mixtures, an approximative procedure is developed taking into account the influence of suction in condensation heat transfer. The accuracy of the method turns out to be satisfactory compared with results obtained by numerical analysis.

Notes: Abstract The equations for equilibrium radii of vapour bubbles and liquid droplets are derived starting from the Thomson-Helmholtz-equation for the vapour pressure at curved interfaces, and the results are then compared with those from well-known equations of the technical literature. These equations usually make use of the vapour-pressure equations of a plane vapour-liquid interface. The differences in equilibrium radii of vapour bubbles proved to be negligible for high boiling temperatures, they become, however, important for low boiling temperatures. For liquid droplets the deviations are considerably higher and the use of the vapour pressure for a plane vapour-liquid interface is not correct.

Notes: Abstract Using the mixing length model, equations were established to calculate the velocity profiles and pressure drop in turbulent downward directed gas/film flow. The thermal diffusivity needed for the calculation of heat transfer was determined from a semiempirical model. The calculated Nußelt-numbers agreed very well with experiments. For the design of falling-film evaporators, a computer program was developed, which enables to evaluate wall temperature, film thickness, evaporation rate etc. as a function of flow-path length.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Measurements performed by means of an optical method showed, that for a given system of liquid and heating surface there exists no specific value of bubble frequency and that the frequencies are randomly distributed. The deviation from the the average frequency depends on the properties of the liquid, the geometry of the nucleation site and the flux density of the heat transfer. In binary systems the frequencies decrease with growing difference in concentration of the liquid and the vapour phase.

Notes: Abstract O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorothioate (OOS-TMP), an impurity present in widely used organophosphorus insecticides, has been shown to induce lung injury after oral administration. To date, very little is known about the hemorheological changes which may occur during the inflammation of lung caused by OOS-TMP. The present study has demonstrated that oral administration of OOS-TMP (10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg) to rats produced an increase in whole blood apparent viscosity at 24, 48 and 72 h following the treatment in rats. Concomitantly, the plasma fibrinogen level and red blood cell (RBC) aggregation were increased at 24 and 48 h. There was no change in RBC filterability. Thus, OOS-TMP, a pneumotoxin, was capable of causing a systemic hemorheological alteration, probably via increase in fibrinogen content, an acute-phase protein, in rats.

Notes: Abstract  In six healthy right-handed volunteers, we compared the cerebral activation pattern related to unimanual right- and left-hand movements and to bimanual in-phase and anti-phase movements using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Internally paced unimanual finger-to-thumb opposition movements led to a strong contralateral activation of primary sensorimotor areas in all six subjects. Midline activity was lateralized to the left side during right-hand movements, but to both sides during left-hand movements. Activity patterns of bimanual in-phase movements resembled the combined activity patterns of the two unimanual conditions: right and left hemispheric activations of the primary sensorimotor cortices and predominantly left-sided medial frontal activity. In contrast, during anti-phase movements, we observed a clear increase in activity, in both right and left frontal midline areas and in right hemispheric, mainly dorsolateral premotor areas compared to in-phase movements. These results indicate that frontal midline activity is not specific for bimanual movements per se. It can already be involved during simple unimanual movements but becomes progressively more involved during more complex aspects of movement control.
