Notes: Gross and microscopic radioautographic observations have been made on the sequential distribution of 32P in the brain and spinal cord of the dog after intracisternal injection as orthophosphate. There appear to be two stages in the process of 32P incorporation into central nervous tissues. In the first, the phosphate in the CSF penetrates the central nervous tissue by diffusion. In the second, the phosphate is incorporated into various organic compounds in response to metabolic processes. The chronological changes in intraneuronal 32P localization indicate incorporation into cellular protein, RNA, DNA, and lipid and depend upon the turnover rate of 32P in these fractions. In the metabolism of phosphate the molecular layer of the cerebellum probably is involved only in rapid changes reflected by the acid-soluble fraction. The cellular layers in addition are concerned with slower processes such as incorporation into structural compounds.

Notes: Summary Six cases of congenital subscalp nodule associated with underlying cranium bifidum are reported. A plain skull roentgenogram showed a midline bone defect in the parieto-occipital region near the lambda. CT scan demonstrated neither brain malformation nor ventricular deformity except for the high position of the straight sinus. Cerebral angiography revealed an elongation of the vein of Galen and anomalous upward course of the straight sinus. At surgery, the tumor was solid and connected to a cord which extended intracranially via the cranium bifidum and blended with thickened arachnoid membrane either on the dorsal aspect of the midbrain or at the surface of the anterior vermis. Histologically, the tumor consisted in all cases of arachnoid cells and fibrous tissue with immature glial cells in one case. Possible pathogenesis of these tumors could be a result of the fetal nuchal bleb.

Notes: Silica-coating of AgI nanoparticles with a Stöber method was carried out to find outreaction conditions for control of the shell thickness. The AgI nanoparticles were prepared fromAgClO4 and KI with the use of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) as a silane coupling agentand dimethylamine (DMA) catalyst for alkoxide hydrolysis. The silica-coating was performed at4.5×10-6-4.5×10-5 M MPS, 11-20 M water, 0.002-0.1 M DMA and 0.005-0.04 Mtetraethylorthosilicate at AgI concentrations of 0.1-1 mM. Consequently, AgI-silica core-shellparticles could be prepared with the use of 4.5×10-5 M MPS, 20 M water, 0.01 M DMA and 1 mMAgI. Silica shell thickness could be varied from 15 to 28 nm with an increase in the TEOSconcentration from 0.005 to 0.04 M

Notes: Summary Serum opsonic activity against zymosan was found to be decreased more markedly in highly diluted O type serum than in the other 3 types, among which no difference was noted. Heat-killed bacteria were equally well opsonized with any type of serum. This peculiar activity of O type serum against zymosan was not affected by the removal of isohemagglutinins. No inhibitory activity was demonstrable in O type serum.

Notes: Summary Human neutrophils preincubated with chemotactic factors showed enhanced OPZ-induced oxygen consumption. Maximum capacity of neutrophils to consume oxygen was found to be limited for both FMLP-treated cells and control cells. But with lower doses of OPZ, FMLP-treated cells consumed more oxygen than control cells.

Notes: Age-momentum correlation (AMOC) spectroscopy, which can sensitively probe momentum distributions of positrons and positronium (Ps), was conducted for studying the pick-off process of the triplet bound state ortho-Ps (o-Ps) with electrons at the walls of the free volume holes. Influences of different chemical elements forming free volume and the size of the free volume are investigated. It is found that the momentum distribution of o-Ps pick off annihilation sensitively depends on the electronic state. The feasibility of the chemical analysis relevant to the free volume in insulating materials is discussed

Notes: The mechanism of gas permeation in sulfonated polymers such as Nafion and sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) for polymer electrolyte fuel cells has been investigated from the viewpoint of free volume. Free volume was quantified using the positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) technique and O2 permeability was measured as a function of temperature or ion exchange capacity (IEC). Good linear correlations between the logarithm of the permeabilities and reciprocal free volume indicate that gas permeation in the sulfonated polymers depends strongly on the free volume. Comparison of Nafion with SPES and other relatively flexible chain polymers showed that the stiff chains of the perfluoroethylene backbone in Nafion make the O2 permeability much smaller than the corresponding flexible chain polymer with a similar free volume size. The O2 permeability in the K+-form of Nafion is systematically smaller than the H+-form, showing that the chain stiffness is enhanced by the ion exchange
