Description / Table of Contents: Summary The aerobic and anaerobic cultivation of Bacterium bifidum-Tissier in Tomarelli-solution produces L-lactic acid in different sugars. No lactic acid production was observed in sugar alcohols. The maximum lactic acid concentration was more than 20 mMol per liter after 14 days incubation at 37°C. The highest lactic acid production was observed with 2% maltose in aerobic condition, whereas 2% lactose gave us the highest concentration in the anaerobic state. Quantitative lactic acid determinations are recommended in stead of acid titrations for classification of mikroorganisms.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The strains No. 6 and Tissier of Bacterium bifidum were adapted to oxygen by aerobic cultivation in potatoe solution according to Mayer. The gas metabolism of these cells was measured in the absence of carbon dioxyde by the manometric method of Warburg. During multiplication in potatoe solution the air-adapted Bifidum has a high uptake of oxygen. The total oxygen uptake and the cell mass produced in the course of three manometric experiments were the same, though the three experiments were begun with cell numbers in the relation 1∶2∶3.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The original Bacterium bifidum Tissier from Pasteur Institute, Paris, and all strains isolated by us from stools of breast-fed newborns are catalasenegative. Aerobic cultivation of these strains as well as the original Tissier strain in three different culture media according to Mayer developed catalase activity. The catalase activity decreases when the same strains were cultured under the same conditions in the anaerobic state. From our results we conclude that catalase activity is not a constant property of bacteria, but depends upon the enviroment in which the organism is cultured.
