Summary In rabbits anesthetized with chloralose-urethane, Ag-AgCl-KCl-Agar-glass capillary electrodes were slowly driven through the atlantooccipital membrane, the cisterna magna, 4. ventricle and medulla oblongata. The distribution of potentials along this way against a similar electrode on the outside of the atlanto-occipital membrane was observed. The cerebrospinal fluid was found to be 12,4 mV, standard deviation ± 1,8 mV, positive against the electrode of reference. The medulla oblongata was slightly negative or had a potential around O against the electrode of reference. The highest potential gradient is found on the arachnoid. The potential gradients from cerebrospinal fluid into the medulla oblongata were about 1 mV/cm. The origin of the arachnoid potential is discussed. The meninges act like the connective tissue sheath of peripheral nerve as a resistance against diffusion of electrolytes.
