Summary The thermal decomposition of alkyl iodide (methyl and ethyl iodide) was found to be an additional significant source of error in the determination of alkyl imide in model and material studies. When temperatures of more than 300° are avoided, quantitative results are obtained. On the other hand, temperatures below 300° may lead to non-quantitative results because of incomplete splitting of quaternary ammonium compounds. Special attention should be directed to agreement in the temperature of the interior of the flask and that of the heating bath.
