Description / Table of Contents: Summary The behaviour of dye-dilution curves registered at the ear during changes of the hemodynamic situation was studied by comparison with a curve recorded simultaneously with a dichromatic ear piece and an arterial cuvette. Under load the surface of the ear curve falls to a markedly lesser estent as a minifestation of an increase in the width of the lyaer. Even greater is the difference snhortly after loading. In the standing position the width of the layer decreases slightly but not significantly. An increase in the width of the layer is also found depending on the duration of the study process due to the heat effect of the light source. A calibration method for the quantitative evaluation of the curves recorded at the ear are described. Here a dynamic calibration via an ear simulator is combined with a correction of the width of the layer by measuring the infrared-absorption of the ear before are after anemisation by means of pressure from outside. The method is recommendable for examinations where abstention from arterial punctures is necessary or desirable.

Notes: Synopsis Masked metachromasia can be demonstrated in thyroid C cells, and other cells of the APUD series, by staining with a metachromatic basic dye after hydrolysis of suitably fixed tissue. The reaction is thought to be due to the presence of polypeptides with a high concentration of side-chain acidic group. Since most APUD cells possess storage granules, presumed to contain a polypeptide hormone, it has been assumed that the masked metachromasia reaction gives information concerning the contents of these granules. However, there has been an increasing suspicion that the reaction might actually be due to the membrane bounding these granules, rather than to the contents. We have examined, cytochemically and ultrastructurally, dog thyroid tissue which has been subjected to fixation and hydrolysis as in the usual method for masked metachromasia. We found that the membrane surrounding the C cell granules is removed by hydrolysis, confirming the hypothesis that the reaction is due to the contents (hormone and/or matrix) rather than to the mambrane. Tissues were fixed in an aqueous mixture containing glutaraldehyde (6.25% v/v), picric acid (three-quarters saturation) and sodium acetate (1% w/v) adjusted to pH7 with sodium hydroxide. This was found to be a very satisfactory fixative for electron microscopy Some morphological details of C cells were noted, such as the richness of desmosomes between C cells in this species, and frequent direct contact with the colloid.

Notes: Synopsis Masked metachromasia is demonstrated by staining with a metachromatic basic dye, after acid hydrolysis of suitably fixed tissue. We report that the addition of 20% Carbowax 20M (an inert polymer, mol. wt. about 20000) to the hydrolysis mixture improved the reaction. The improved method gives increased metachromasia, greater tolerance to variations in hydrolysis conditions, and demonstrates a greater proportion of cells — presumably due to a lower threshold of sensitivity. Lower molecular weight polymers (Carbowax 1000, Carbowax 6000) are less effective.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The paper describes a new 50 V BiCMOS smart power process. The development includes the monolithic integration of dielectrical isolated 1.5 μm CMOS devices, NPN/PNP bipolar transistors, 50 V vertical and quasivertical DMOS power transistors, poly-n + capacitors, Zener diodes, implanted resistors and double metal wiring. The process will be used to fabricate efficient and self protected circuits with integrated diode or DMOS full bridges. Based on an industrial 1.5 μm CMOS, circuit robustness is achieved by adding dielectric isolation and high voltage transistors. Vertical trenches, 1.2 μm wide, filled with oxide and polysilicon, yield lateral isolation between devices. Vertical isolation is given by SIMOX technology (Separation by IM-planted OXygen). An additional ion implant optimises a vertical or quasivertical DMOS power transistor with low on resistance. Bipolar transistors are integrated without extra masking steps. The circuit layout is compatible to existing CMOS standard cell libraries. Beyond SIMOX, wafer bonded substrates may be used as starting material. Efficient design and fabrication characterise this process suited for automotive applications.
