    Notes: The structural and electrical properties of as grown multicrystalline (mc) solar silicon have been characterized with special emphasis on the ingot's edge regions. For this purpose a vertical cross section of an mc-Si Bridgman ingot was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), laser scattering tomography (LST), lateral photovoltage scanning (LPS), infrared microscopy and microwave detected photoconductivity decay (&PCD). Images of the distribution of dislocations, grain boundaries, precipitates, impurities (O, N, C) and the minority charge carrier lifetime were obtained, partly differentiating the defects by their electrical activity. In particular the LPS method displays dopant striations indicating the shape of the phase boundary. Deviations of the phase boundary from a slightly convex shape in the middle of the ingot to a concave one in the vicinity of the side walls could be observed. The existence of an horizontal temperature gradient deduced from this shape is the reason for convection in the melt. The influence on the concentration profiles of interstitial oxygen and the correlation with the minority charge carrier lifetime are discussed

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The so-called physiologically active volume of extra-cellular fluid (ECFa), glomerular filtration (CIn) and effective renal plasma flow (CPAH) were determined simultaneously in 10 obese and non-obese persons without pathological findings of the endocrine, metabolic and circulatory organs. In 9 out of the 10 obese patients the absolute values of ECFa were higher than those of persons of normal weight. The relative volume of extra-cellular fluid computed to body weight (1/100 kg) was, except in 3 obese persons, lower. We attribute the diminution in relative extra-cellular fluid less to genuine extracellular dehydration than to a lower water content of adipose tissue. In 3 obese patients there were indications of fluid retention. As a result of the different volumes of extra-cellular fluid in lean body mass and in adipose tissue ECFa in obesity cases cannot be judged by values computed to body weight. Although the volumes of extra-cellular fluid in the obese persons differed, there were significant positive relations between physiologically active extra-cellular fluid (1) and inulin-clearance (ml/min) as well as ECFa (1) and effective plasma renal flow (ml/min).
    Notes: Zusammenfassung An zehn nieren-kreislaufgesunden Fettsüchtigen und normalgewichtigen Personen wurden simultan der sog. physiologisch aktive Anteil der Extracellulärflüssigkeit (ECFa) ,das Glomerulumfiltrat und der effektive Nierenplasmastrom bestimmt. Bei 9 von 10 Fettsüchtigen waren die absoluten Werte des ECFa gegenüber normalgewichtigen Personen vergrößert. Das relative, auf das Körpergewicht bezogene Extracellulärvolumen der überernährten Probanden lag mit Ausnahme von drei Adipösen niedriger als das der Normalpersonen. Es wird vermutet, daß die Ursache für die relative Verkleinerung des ECFa weniger in einer echten extracellulären Dehydratation als in dem geringeren Wassergehalt des Fettgewebes zu suchen ist. Bei drei Patienten bestanden Hinweise für eine Flüssigkeitsretention. Auf Grund des unterschiedlichen extracellulären Flüssigkeitsanteiles für magere Körpermasse und Fettgewebe kann das physiologisch aktive Extracellulärvolumen bei alimentärer Fettsucht nicht nach den auf das Körpergewicht bezogenen Werten beurteilt werden. Obwohl die extracellulären Volumina Fettsüchtiger unterschiedlich waren, bestanden zwischen physiologisch aktiver Extracellulärflüssigkeit und Inulin-Clearance als auch ECFa und effektivem Nierenplasmastrom signifikante, positive Regressionen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary We found the concentration of the neurohormone in the peripheral venous plasma of 12 metabolically normal persons, 15 adipose and 8 edematous patients and 17 persons after dehydration or peroral water laoding under the sensitivity limit (20 µE ADH/ml Plasma) of an improved ADH-assay on the hydrated alkohol-narcotized rats. Loss of ADH during preparation could be eleminated to a very large extent. Data in the literature indicating higher concentrations in the human plasma are mostly methodical errors. Temperature influence on ADH inactivation: Plasma incubated with vasopressin at + 37°C lost 80% of the original activity during 24h in vitro tests. Low temperature (+ 4°C) inhibited the inactivation largely and deep-frozen plasma (-15°C) did not show a loss of activity after 4 1/2 month within the limits of our method.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Mit einer verbesserten biologischen ADH-Bestimmungsmethode an der hydratisierten alkoholnarkotisierten Ratte lag die Konzentration des Neurohormons im peripheren venösen Blutplasma von 12 stoffwechselgesunden Versuchspersonen, 15 Fettsüchtigen, 8 Ödemkranken und 17 Probanden nach Dehydration oder einer peroralen Wasserbelastung unterhalb der Empfindlichkeitsgrenze des Nachweises von 20 µE ADH/ml Plasma. ADH-Verluste bei der Aufarbeitung konnten weitgehend ausgeschlossen werden. Angaben über höhere ADH-Konzentrationen im Blutplasma des Menschen in der Literatur müssen meist auf methodische Fehler zurückgeführt werden. Die Temperatur beeinflußt die ADH-Inaktivierung. Bei in vitro-Versuchen verlor das bei + 37° C mit Vasopressin inkubierte Plasma innerhalb von 24 Std ca. 80% seiner ursprünglichen Aktivität. Niedrige Temperaturen (+ 4° C) hemmen die Inaktivierung deutlich. In tiefgefrorenem Plasma (-15° C) konnte ein Wirkungsverlust nach 4 1/2 Monaten nicht nachgewiesen werden.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Renal clearance rates (ml/min) of inulin (CIn) and paraamino-hippuric acid (CPAH) were determined simultaneously in 15 obese patients with healthy kidneys and 17 persons of normal weight. CIn and CPAH were computed to the standard unit 1,73 m2 body surface area. Individual surface areas are calculated on the basis of real and “ideal” body weight. Our investigations show that the rates of renal clearance (ml/min/1,73 m2) depend to a considerable extent upon the selected surface area-actual or “ideal” body surface. Analysis indicates that in obese patients a significant connection exists between glomerulum filtration (CIn) and the ideal surface area. No connection was established for inulin clearance (CIn) and actual surface area, nor for CPAH and real and “ideal” body surface area. In the determination of clinical clearance rates CIn and CPAH both should in cases of obesity be computed to the “ideal” surface area. The mean glomerular filtration of obese persons was found to lie significantly above the mean value of persons of normal weight. CPAH was normal except in two patients which had lowered paraamino-hippuric acid clearances. The filtration fraction was on average significantly above that of the persons of normal weight. Functional influences are discussed as the reason for the different renal clearance values of obese persons.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Bei 15 nierengesunden Fettsüchtigen und 17 normalgewichtigen Personen bestimmten wir simultan Inulin- und Paraaminohippursäure-Clearance. Außerdem untersuchten wir die Beziehung zwischen den absoluten Clearance-Werten einerseits sowie tatsächlicher und „idealer“ Körperoberfläche andererseits. Nach unseren Untersuchungen werden die Werte der Nieren-Clearance (ml/min/1,73 m2) Adipöser erheblich von der gewählten Bezugsgröße — der tatsächlichen oder „idealen“ Körperoberfläche — beeinflußt. Durch Regressionsanalysen ließ sich zeigen, daß bei überernährten Probanden zwischen Glomerulumfiltrat und ihrer „idealen“ Körperoberfläche ein signifikanter Zusammenhang bestand. Keinerlei Beziehung ergab sich für Inulin-Clearance und tatsächliche Körperoberfläche sowie für den effektiven Nierenplasmastrom einerseits und tatsächliche bzw. „ideale“ Körperoberfläche andererseits. Die Frage, welche der Bezugsgrößen bei klinischen Clearance-Bestimmungen Fettsüchtiger zu verwenden ist, beantworteten wir sowohl für Inulin- als auch PAH-Clearance zugunsten der „idealen“ Körperoberfläche. Unter Berücksichtigung der „idealen“ Körperoberfläche lag das Glomerulumfiltrat der Fettsüchtigen im Mittel signifikant über dem des Vergleichskollektivs, während ihre PAH-Clearance durchschnittlich normal, bei 2 von 15 Adipösen erniedrigt ausfiel. Die Filtrationsfraktion war gegenüber der normalgewichtiger Personen im Mittel signifikant erhöht. Als Grund der veränderten Nieren-Clearance Fettsüchtiger werden funktionelle Einflüsse diskutiert.
